NCAAF  > Wisconsin Badgers  > Heisman watch: RUSSELL WILSON (Wisconsin Badgers)
September 22, 2011, 06:06 PM
There's no mention of the Heisman Trophy in the latest version of the University of Wisconsin football team's weekly news release that includes 38 pages of facts and figures about the Badgers and their next opponent, South Dakota.

But the idea of kicking off a campaign for senior quarterback Russell Wilson in the near future has been more than a passing thought in the mind of UW director of athletic communications Brian Lucas.

He's showing up on more and more lists, but he would have have "TIMMER!" (Tebow) like numbers to have a shot I would think.

Big numbers against NEB and other B1G teams will be noticed.

And going undefeated would certainly help too.

Recent history for the Heisman has been the winner is QB/RB for one of the teams playing in the NCG.

Tebow (2007) and Dayne (1999) are the only recent exceptions and they both put up super-human numbers.

Luck may go #1 in the draft, but Stanford ain't going to the NCG. I doubt he puts up Tebow--esque numbers to win the Heisman for a team that's not #1 or #2l.

Same with Kellen Moore at Boise, Lattimore at USCe and Griffin III at Baylor.

Everybody saw LaMichael James get shut down by LSU, so I don't think his season numbers will impress voters as much this year.

Neither Alabama nor LSU has a QB who will have the stats. Maybe Trent Richardson will follow in Ingram's footsteps, but Alabama has always been about team play and defense, not star ball carriers--great for the W-L record, not so great for the Heisman collection on campus.

IMO, Landry Jones at OU is the front runner, but if Wisconsin runs the table Wilson will get a lot of votes and could easily win it.

One or two total highlight video moments are also pretty huge-CN and Bush come to mind.

heismanpundit has a good track record of predicting the winner.

It's too early in the season to make any sense of their poll yet, but once conference play begins it should give you a good guess as to Wilson's chances.

I agree. The problem has been Wisconsins style of football. The RB is about the only postition (which it has won the award with) that will win.

I think Cam Newton being a one- year-wonder helps Wilson. I know, I know he put up great stats for the wolfpack, but he is finally in the spotlight.

Agreed. Part of Cam's Heisman appeal was the idea that his joining the team was the difference between Auburn going to the Outback Bowl and winning the NCG.

Wisconsin seems like a better team with Wilson and NC State seems much worse without him. A good indication of Wilson's value to a team, if voters want to see it that way.

After the beat down (corn roasting) this weekend, I'm hearing the public cry by the sports world claiming Wilson is the new Cam "Fig" Newton. If he finishes off the season like he's started, I see no reason why he won't be at the downtown athletic club too.

October 2, 2011  01:05 PM ET

Come on if he played for the Buckeye's we would have lost all of our games! JK!

Well said and very true.

Also been fortunate to have quality back ups that can play more than mop up duty.

Didn't work so well for Oregon either.
