NFL  > Denver Broncos  > Is Josh McDaniels the answer?
January 12, 2009, 11:10 AM
All I am hearing is that he is too young. I think if you asked Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, or Bill Belichek, they would strongly disagree. Any Patriot fans have anything to say?

It might just be a wee bit early to answer that questions, maybe ask it again after week 8 or 10 in November.

He is an excellent offensive mind. The problem is that Bowlin fired the man with one of the best offensive minds in the game. With a running game (i.e., running backs who are not on IR) the offense would be fabuloous. The area that needs the most work is defense. The choice of Defensive Co-ordinator is key.

January 12, 2009  11:21 PM ET

We needeed a defensive mind. Pat fired one of the best offensive minds in the game. With healthy running backs, we would have had the best offense in the league.

If McDaniels can do as well as Shanahan, I will be amazed.

January 13, 2009  06:01 AM ET

In my opinion, McDaniels is the 32 year old version of Shanahan. I think that if Shanahan's ego didnt get in the way by thinking he could make any ugly b!+ch prom queen (make any RB a pro-bowler) then he would still have a job. I would love to see Michael Bush in orange next year.

January 13, 2009  08:18 AM ET

If i was to look at what Denvers problem was last year I see no reason why they would fire Mike and go after McDaniels, it was DEFENSE ..DEFENSE...DEFENSE ...look at the teams still alive and besides Zona every other team is a defensive beast!! And Zona won because of the great defense they played that night!! although McDaniels is a offensive wizz it seams to me they needed to get a defensive minded coach like Wile E. had said!! But good luck McDaniels unless your D gets better you will be back to being an O cord in less then 3 years !!

January 13, 2009  12:20 PM ET

It just shows that power can corrupt all. When Shannahan refused to fire the DEF Coaches for the um-teenth time Bowlen had to do something. True Shannahan was one of the best Offensive minds but DEF wins Championships. Colts were great with Manning prior to Dungy but Dungy upgraded their defense and they won a Superbowl. Now of course McDaniels is young, and an old Offensive Coordinator, but Bowlen can now fire Def coaches and hire people like Mike Nolan and hopefully build a better D. Shannahans Drafts have been too many busts. And COME ON raiding a garbage Clevland DEF line to fix your DEF worries, spending money on flops or has-beens was insane. McDaniels is a prodigy, trained by some of the best coaches, from Nick Saben at Michigan State to Bill Billichek in New England. Its like getting a new hire for company that graduated from Harvard or MIT with honors. One of the best things that could happen this off season is that Denver drafts Rey Maualuga at 12 and maybe have Taylor Mays drop to the 2nd and maybe DEN can get him and DEN can shore up the D in a huge way. Those two would allow Denver to build up the rest of the D over the next few years while having a huge immediate impact. (oh and for those who think I am being USC bias...see Ronnie Lott back in the day all the way to guys like Troy Palamalu and Lofa Tatupu, USC creates surefire defensemen for the NFL.)

January 13, 2009  02:12 PM ET

I am waiting with bated breath to see who the new GM is. The Broncos can still make a move to shore up the defense, but so far I am not sure what the benefit is with firing Shanahan and bringing in another offense-minded coach!

January 13, 2009  02:24 PM ET

Not a Patriots' fan here but I just don't see this. Bowlen is proving himself to be just another owner, following the current trend of hiring young "Geniuses". Reminds me of Lane Kiffin, or David Shula. There have been a couple of good young "Geniuses" in the past and even the present (Tomlin), but I think it is too risky a path to replace a legendary coach like Shanahan with an unproven quantity. It's dangerous to the team as well as McDaniels. Have a losing year this year and Denver will be calling for the return of Shanahan.

January 13, 2009  04:34 PM ET

We are going to have a losing season, because of our schedule, and a lot of rebuilding defensively. I have never seen a more tough schedule in my life.

January 13, 2009  05:27 PM ET

Nolen will bolster the D, I say pick up.. say Tank Johnson and Lito Shepard maybe a Jonathan Vilma to make a splash but not one so big that it emptys the pool. Draft Rey Maualuga or Michael Johnson, couple of DTs and DEs another promising young WR. We have decent RBs but none that I trust. I do like Petyon Hillis, he reminds me of Le'Ron McClain. But I guess we have not seen enough of Ryan Torin to know if he can live up to the hype (imagine that, alot of hype from a 5th round pick)

January 13, 2009  06:21 PM ET

what's the question?

January 13, 2009  09:03 PM ET

the Pat's proved that a high scoring offense is the best "Defense", McDaniels will be succesful it's in his blood and he has the right training under one of the best coaches of this generation.

January 13, 2009  11:31 PM ET

The Broncs made a mistake in not grabing Pioli as the new GM, but I do seem to agree with the hiring of Mike Nolan as the D-cord. I think that it was a good change of direction to go after a coaching staff with the 3-4 mind set, they HAVE to stop the run, that way we aren't going to rely on Champ to make tackles

True, as far as that goes, but there are many who left and didn't 'quite' make; ie: Charlie Weis, et al. I do wish Josh well in the Mile High City.

Charlie Weis is an NFL coach that went into the college biz, that is rarely done successfully on either side of that NFL to College or College to NFL.

Josh McDaniels will be fine. He already proved he knows what he's doing by bringing in Mike Nolan to coach the defense.I know that defense was a huge issue for us last year, but just as big of a problem was our red zone offense. We settled for way to many field goals last year. I am excited to see what happens next. I think bringing in John Elway as GM would be tremendous. Bring on the offseason and the draft.

I am the biggest Broncos fan you will find. This is why it was right to fire Shannahan. The benefit of firing Shanahan is that he will no longer be making brutal personnel moves that have screwed this team. There is absolutely nothing wrong with his coaching ability but his personnel moves have been ridiculous. That is what cost him his job, not necessarily the coaching.

January 14, 2009  11:52 PM ET

mike nolan, ex. 49ers coach, is the defensive coordinator. he prefers the 3-4 which denver doesnt have the personnel for. this is going to be the key. if they can transition the D this season all will be all right. if not cutler & co's talents will be wasted while they transition the defense over the nest 3 or 4 years.

Denver's D consists of DJ Williams, Champ Bailey, Dre Bly, (maybe Drummerville and Jamie Winborn((see his 08 performance)), the rest are expendable. Switching to a 3-4 shouldnt be a problem.

Here is the real answer.. Everyone, well 80% of Denver was sick of the same routine. It got to the point where fans knew what was going on, which probably made it even easier on the opponents... Like the famoust, 1st and Goal on the 1, and we run up the middle 3 time... geesh. MC D will bring something we wanted, FRESHNESS.. Now, I hate to say it, but we should look at picking up a playmaker, instead of D in the first round... Percy Harvin or Beanie Wells!
