NFL  > General NFL  > Top Six Things the Steelers Must Do to Win at Houston
September 28, 2011, 07:36 PM
In my opinion, these are the six things the Steelers have to do to win Sunday. I wanted to trim this down to five, but all of these thing are so important to winning this football game. This is a huge game for both franchises, the winner will show how for real they are this season!

6) Protect Big Ben - I don't care who your quarterback is or who's playing defense, if he's not getting protected then he's not going to play well. Lots of rushed throws, lots of improvisation, lots of sacks, and lots of fumbles are the results we've seen thus far from Ben ... and if I'm gonna point the finger somewhere I'm pointing it there. It starts up front. We need to protect Ben from Mario Williams or it's going to be a tough day!

5) Get Matt Shaub uncomforatable]/b] - Frankly, Shaub's one of the best in the games and he never gets the respect he's deserved. If he gets comfortable back there in the pocket, he'll find Andre Johnson or somebody out there for a big gain. As old and tired as our pass rush may be, they need to step it up against Shaub and make him uncomforatable.

4) [b]Actually call running plays!
- Yeah, I'm talking to you Bruce! Let's run the ball against this defense, even if we aren't getting the pretty looking yards per carry that you want. We need to run, run, run! Then run some more with Redman! And a little more with Moore!

3) RUN THE BALL EFFECTIVELY. - Calling the runs is one thing, but today against the Texans, we HAVE to run it effectively. If we can run it well, it'll open up the play action and everything else should fall into place for the offense. It's important to call the runs and that will be key, but running it effectively will be even more important.

2) TAKE FOSTER/TATE OUT OF THE EQUATION - Matt Shaub is good and all but this running game is out of control. Not only are they key to winning this game and making this offense one dimensional but this defense needs to make a statement. They look old and tired, not like the number one rush defense the league has seen in decades ... they must show up and take away the running game in order to take this game. Without play action, Shaub will struggle!

1) GET TURNOVERS & PROTECT THE FOOTBALL - The Steelers usually do a good job of this ... not this season. This will be key today and it will be key for the season. This is a great football team but the turnovers can make a great football team look like one of the worst in the league (i.e. week one at Baltimore). If we can protect the football and even better, get turnovers, the Steelers are almost assured the win.

they kind of struggled on the road with a peyton-less colts,.......i think the high-powered[youth] of the texans might prevail here......[m.-op.].

Marge, as much as I hate to say it, I think you're right!!
I'm not all that confident that the Steelers will be able to get all those things done on Sunday .. but IMO the Colts just looked like a competitive football team last Sunday. I heard a lot of people say we "struggled" and we looked "old" but I just think this was a game were both teams showed up and wanted to win.
As bad as the Colts look, they really aren't THAT bad, man. I'm seeing them 32nd on Power-ranking lists .. I think it's ridiculous. That game showcased the Colts' talents more then it showcased the Steelers' lack of talent.

Let's take a look at this shall we?

Protect Ben -- 5 sacks today, numerous knockdowns .. absolutely no protection all day long.

Get Shaub uncomfortable - Was he hit at all today? I don't think so. Shaub had perfect projection all day. He didn't look solid today but it didn't look like the reason for that was because he was under pressure.

Actually call running plays - We did run the ball but not nearly enough ... Mendenhall/Redman should've had over 30 carries.

Run the ball effectively - Mendenhall was unable to get anything going at all. Redman did a good job, like always, but the running game was not nearly as effective as it should have been.

Take Foster out of the equation - Foster ran all over us. The blocking was perfect, this offensive line had one hell of a day.

Get Turnovers - Not a single turnover was forced today by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

So we didn't do ANY of the things we needed to do to win today. If Houston didn't keep shooting themselves in the foot, this would've been a blowout. I'm gonna go get drunk now ..

THIS is why everybody said the Steelers needed to draft for the O-line (and secondary). If they don't do that this next draft it's time to get rid of Colbert.

Agreed. I think they would have but Pouncy brother did not drop. They need to address O-line and I think they will.

October 2, 2011  07:06 PM ET

No. Colbert is a god....Do not go here yet.....
