The Mountain West and Conference USA merging to form a 22 team league? How can this possibly be a good idea? Well, other than blackmailing the BCS into including them in the next negotiations...
October 14, 2011  09:49 PM ET

How are they going to divide that up? They'll end up having a playoff just to get into the playoff (that will start after this years 16 undefeated teams)....

C-USA stretches from Florida (UCF) to Texas, and as far north as West Virginai (Marshall).

MWC stretches from San Diego to New Mexico, and as far north as Wyoming.

So by combining, they form a conference national is scope. Maybe they plan to call themselves the National football League, and assume that mere BCS teams will beg to be included.

Farther. Boise State is in the MWC now.

I guess the idea is to keep other leagues from poaching their teams. But if one of the Big 4 come calling (sorry Big East, that doesn't include you) I'm sure any of these teams would bolt.

Not 100% behind this, but as currently the SB, MAC, and WAC (as of 2012) will stink on ice you have a pretty good argument that the best team from this new super conference should get 1 auto BCS spot. If you think about it the BE will get 1 spot for 8 teams, so its not like one spot for 20 or so teams would be unfair-it would also quiet down any calls from congress.

If it works out as I think it will this is a good move for everyone (as long as there is a CC game to preclude two undefeated teams).

As an added bonus, the ****-ugly MWC logo will hit the bricks.

What if... there are no automatic BCS spots after the new contract is negotiated in 2013? Then what?

+1 on the MWC logo. Stop Massive Dynamics now!

Then that probably means a playoff is in the air, which would be a huge improvement.

What am I missing? As far as I know a conference's standing with the BCS depends on quality, not quantity. The MWC/CUSA could double up by adding another 22 bottom-half teams from Mid-America and Sun Belt, but it won't make them any more compelling to the BCS. 2 or 3 competitive teams in a conference aren't made better by raising the total from 9 to 22.

When you exclude one or two teams every year from out west, say Boise State, TCU or Utah, no one pays much attention. When you exclude a super conference of 22 schools that stretches from coast to coast in favor of schools of equal or lesser stature (like the future Big East conference) then you've got some explaining to do. Or anti-trust lawsuits to deal with. Or both.

I think this new Mountain-USA merger is going to stretch even further than that. Hawaii is/was set to join the MWC in 2012.

I'm trying to add up all the football schools who are going to be in the new conference because I keep seeing conflicting numbers of 20 or 22... and I think SI.com posted a range of 20-24. So here's who I think will be in the conference in 2012, correct me if I'm wrong because college football facts aren't my strongpoint:

Conference-USA (12)
East Carolina, Marshall, Memphis, Southern Miss, UAB, UCF
Houston, Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, UTEP

Mountain West (10)
Air Force, Boise St, Colorado St, New Mexico, San Diego St, UNLV, Wyoming
Fresno St, Hawaii, Nevada

I didn't include TCU, for obvious reasons. And I'm totaling 22 schools. But I guess the big question mark is how many (if any) schools are going to accept invites from the Big East.

Why can't the crappy mid-majors just quit crying already and just play some football. If you want a shot at a national championship then play more than 1 quality team each year. I just wish all this nonsense would cease so we can just get back to some good footbal

Nice trolling. Obviously if we could just play some football then there would be no issue and TCU would have been the national champion last year.....

However we currently don't just play football. Games are played, but then a panel of old dudes and computers decides what the results mean and who is better than whom. Compound that with millions of bucks riding on this beauty contest and you have an anti-trust situation...

Don't see the "equal or lesser stature" except for the BE, and I expect them to be downgraded once SYR and PITT are gone. Since they were originally given AQ status, most of the members are now (or soon) gone and replaced by non-AQ/FCS teams (UConn won its first game against any BCS opponent just 10 years ago). WVU and Rutgers are the only originals left, and they gotta be looking for a life preserver.

The BE didn't even have football during its first dozen years, and I see them headed back that way unless Notre Dame decides to join.
