NFL  > Detroit Lions  > Can The Lions Bounce Back
October 18, 2011, 02:46 PM
The Lions dropped a heartbreaker to the upset minded 49ers and now must overcome adversity and hopefully beat the Atlanta Falcons. Coach Schwartz was not too happy with the last minute defeat at the hands of the 49ers and vowed that his team would come back even stronger against the Falcons.

If the Lions are the real deal then they should beat this overrated Falcons team. The Niners got lucky in the last quarter against Detroit and the Lions will treat that game as a character builder in my opinion.

Coach Schwartz better get used to last minute defeats because it happens all the time. If this was the 49'ers team of the last few years, I can understand more about him not being happy. But, the 49'ers have improved tremendously, much like his Lions team.

He should accept it as "growing pains". It wasn't that long ago when they went 0-16, but since he wasn't a part of that season, it don't mean as much as it would to someone who went through it.

I was surprised that the 49ers beat the Lions on their home field.

When your team got off to a great start this year you came on here beating your chest and crowing about how you were going to handle the Packers and I told you the season was still young and it was much too early to get excited. An NFL season is a war with many individual battles and the team that wins the most battles wins the war. We'll be seeing you on Thanksgiving Day.

The Falcons are hardly overrated when you consider their NFC leading 13 wins last season. The 49ers didn't just get lucky, they played great defense and featured a power running game. Maybe Detroit was letting success go to their heads.

Falcons and Lions is going to be a great game. Both teams need this win in their own way. Falcons need to stay in the playoff race. Lions losing 2 in a row would be interesting, just to see how they handle it after all the recent success.

I would not bet against these Lions. And Atlanta just does not look like the same team this year, but only 6 games in to the season who knows?

History is full of teams that 'under' performed in their first half of the season then when on to the SB.
[in 1980 the Raiders started 2-5 and became the first wild card Superbowl winner, so anything can happen, BTW they were not expected to even make the playoff that year]
or
Is it History is full of SB teams that 'over' performed to get there?
or
both

either way I love the Detroit area and will be pulling for the Lions.

I would be more surprised if Atlanta wins this week in Detroit. It seems Detroit is a good test for teams to play in a really close [ ford stadium has the feel of an Arena Field ] and loud environment.

It wasn't luck, it was stupid coaching by Schwartz- 1) he should have never went for the field goal before half-time, he was hoping his kicker would make a field goal he had never made, it allowed the 49ers good field position, they only had to move the ball a short distance in order for Akers to kick a field goal 50+ yards something he has done a couple times already this season. Instead of Detroit leading 10-9 at half they trailed 12-10. 2) He went for the 2 point conversion that would have only put Detroit up by 6 points, but they failed. This took a sure point off the scoreboard, and only left them in position to tie not win the game with a field goal if SF were able to score a TD. The question is ? Will Jahvid Best start? he has a concussion and doesn't look like he will play in the Atlanta game.

Atlanta beating Detroit wouldn't surprise me at all. People are quick to downgrade Atlanta because of their slow start but this team was 13-3 last season and is loaded with play makers.

On a neutral field or Atlanta yes. You think Atlanta will be able to overcome the noise so they can keep the penalties down? Something that really hampered both Chicago and SF playing in Detroit.

So what happened? Why the slow start? And I'm not being confrontational - I really wonder what is wrong with Atlanta.
