NFL  > General NFL  > Tim Tebow: Could race be fueling his first NFL start
October 21, 2011, 06:21 PM
Can you think of a good reason why Tim Tebow is the starter in an NFL team?

Honestly I can't think of one, many experts seem to think he is at best a third string QB.

Another question, in the past the NFL experts opinion were taken to heart by most fans but when it comes to Tim Tebow is a different story.

Am I wrong ?

I guess the fact that many fans want him to get the chance should be enough.

On the ESPN's program First Take there was some discussions on whether race was a factor in the opportunity Tebow is getting to start an NFL game, one could make a case for that.

Facts are many black QBs are pigeon holed and never get a chance to play the position, most end up as a wild cat situation player or a wide receiver.

Can we agree on that

What do you think..

This is not a pot steering exercise.. I post on all relevant sites even when I talk about a player rescuing grand-ma's cat.
I really don't get why you think this is not a relevent subject....

It would be more relevant if you left race out of it.

Why not ask why Tebow is starting because of his accuracy. Or his throwing motion. Or his ability to read a defense. Or any of the other things that cause people to doubt him. No one thinks he's starting because he's white - at least no one with a rational train of thought.

Seems to me Tebow has gotten the exact criticism that many of the black, run first QB's have gotten coming out of school. The Bronco's were roundly criticised for using a #1 pick on him in most quarters.
He's probably getting a start because the team is going nowhere and their other QB's aren't any good.
The backup QB is always a fan favorite until he shows why he's the back up so they might as well give the fans what they seem to want.

Becouse all that has been said and he still starts...he will problably win Sund, who can't beat Miami and the media willide his back until reality sets in...he is not an NFL QB..so say the experts ...

Well like Justin said above - he's probably getting the start because they really don't have many options right now. Mondo Jay also posted a really good comment on your blog that you should check out.

True ....diff is that he actually will get the chance.....look I'm not anti Tebow, I just wonder whats up here..
Do you think the media and the fans had any influence in the decision>>>
Just wonder..

Race has zero to do with Tebow starting. I honestly can't think of too many (or any, perhaps Pat White?) current black QB's that are getting "pigeonholed".

Perhaps someone here can make a credible list of those guys.

Which is the bigger reason for why he is starting.

as one espn-commentator said today,..=...tebow reminded him of doug flutie, a unique player with certain traits [his arm] and certain negatives =height/size,.....but flutie got to play over 12-yrs. in pro-ball.,.....will tebow ?

Yeah - that's a pretty good comparison.

Flutie could put the ball on a dime...Tebow can't

First you said race and now you're saying fans and media. The fans and media certainly played a part but not because he's white. The guy is a charitable fellow, religious and was amazingly successful in college. People eat that sheet up and the media is always desperate for a story so Saint Tim was in all the papers. Since they're not going anywhere they might as well see what they have with the guy the last management team blew the draft pick on. Throw on top of that the fact back up QB's are often seen as saviors when the team is having issues and there's your equation..
