this just in former steelers head coach Bill Cowher is purchasing a home in the Metro Kansas city area.........
January 17, 2009  09:37 AM ET

I would dearly love to see Bill Cowher named as the next Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs! I think the Chiefs should throw everything they have at him. The Chiefs should make Cowher whatever concessions he needs until his daughters get through college. We need him, and I really think he would like to be the Head Coach of the Chiefs!

January 17, 2009  09:52 AM ET

Where is that information just in from?

January 17, 2009  11:53 AM ET

Rumors have it that Mike Shanahan has already had discussions with K.C. about the Head Coaching job there...

January 17, 2009  02:36 PM ET

Just don't take SPags from the GIants!!! i'm hoping Ryan goes to the Jets and Garrett to the Rams... then it's just the Chiefs to worry about (he'd be insane to go to Oakland)

January 18, 2009  09:57 AM ET

If there is a God , please let Cowher come to K.C. I remember when he was the defensive coach in 89 thru 91 and he did a bang up job with a young team back then. He is great with young players as well as the older pro's. Mike Shanahan just wouldn't look right in K.C. colors! Gruden
if a good coach, but I don't think he would fit with the new G.M. Poilo. I have a bad feeling that
we are going to end up with Herm the " you play to win, don't blame me its a team sport, we have a plan, etc" for this year, and it will hurt the team . Mr Edwards (I don't like calling him a coach) is a bad teacher, and its that simple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

January 18, 2009  12:06 PM ET

If a change is made, Cowher will be the target of Chiefs owner Clark Hunt and General Manager Scott Pioli. Its no secret that Hunt admires what the Steelers have done in 40 years with three coaches. Hunt would like to build a similar model of success and stability. Cowher is still relatively young and could be apart of the organization for the next 10-15 years.

Bill Cowher to Kansas City is an interesting possibility and here's why... Cowher coached in Kansas City during the 90's as a Defensive Coordinator for Marty Schottenheimer. He feels a connection to the city and knows how much all of us here in KC have admired what he's accomplished. I have heard many cinics say that Bill would never come to KC because he wants to have all of the control (GM & HC) or that Pioli would want to have all of the power. I don't think that is necessarily true. Both of these gentlemen have been to the top of the mountain, they've won their Super Bowl rings. They know that to get to that point, you need a good front office to set the tone. I think Pioli has shown that he can work with a big name head coach and distribute the power evenly. I think Cowher would like to have fewer responsibilities so he can still be a family man and a football coach. Having someone that you can trust and knowing that person has just as much ownership in the program as you do would be an intriguing opportunity.

I like what Pioli is doing right now. He's taking his time, debriefing Herm and is getting all of his ducks in a row. This could be a lengthy process, but I expect some kind of announcement on Herm's future made in the next week or so. If they do decide to let him go, they'll want to give him enough time to find a job elsewhere. Bill and Herm are friends, so how the Chiefs handle Herm's situation could affect Cowher's interest to return to KC. Also, something to consider... the Chiefs currently opperate a 4-3 defense. Cowher will want to revamp it and turn it into a 3-4. The Chiefs don't have the personnel to support that system as of right now, but with Pioli's help could sign free agents and draft accordingly. A chance to work with his former Offensive Coordinator, Chan Gailey could also be a draw for Cowher to come to KC. The two worked together in Pittsburgh during the late 1990's, before Gailey was hired as Head Coach of the the Dallas Cowboys. Gailey joined the Chiefs last season as Offensive Coordinator.

I am sure that many rumors will circulate throughout the next few weeks. One thing is for certain, Scott Pioli doesn't mind bucking trends and could buck the current trend of hiring 32 year old head coaches. I would not be shocked to see an established coach join the Chiefs and the one slam dunk with fans, ownership and the NFL community would be Bill Cowher. I think its possible, but let's not celebrate just yet. A lot will have to happen to land Mr. Cowher in KC, MO.

Where are you getting this information? Seems very pre-mature. The Chiefs haven't even made a decision on Herm's future yet.

January 18, 2009  03:06 PM ET

You get your info how and from whom? I really get sick of people just making up crap so they can have something new and hot to post! Post your source or dont post at all!Oh wait let me guess, you have a friend or you have a friend who has a friend in the housing market.........Same ole crap, come up with something new and grow up.

January 18, 2009  09:18 PM ET

I agree with ONK, don't post unless you name your source, and I might add ,make sure it is someone who is well know and in a Poisson to know. When you post something that is made up or wishful thinking, all it does is make real fans mad. We are trying to find out what is going on with our team and any real news is very welcome in regards to the chiefs. I thank you in advance for keeping it real fans. And for the guys who post because they have nothing better to do than to tick off the real fans, I hope your legs grow together and you get lock jaw and sea sickness...l Keep the faith guys, the Chiefs will rise again...

As for Cowher, I think Poilo will end up giving herm until the end of his contract ,which is one more year, to make some big strides with his young team. Cowher will then step in in 2010 and take the job, because we all know that Herm talks a good show, but can't produce . Is it just me and the fact that I don't like Herm, or is he one slick talking, non committal, beat around the bush individual? He can talk for 15 min. in a press conference and not say a thing. After he leaves you are setting there thinking , What, huh, hay, duh, we play to win, mentally tough, young, I have a plan, we are evaluating that,.......duh. Think about this, has he once said,,, "the coaching staff is not doing the job we should and we need to take a hard look at what we are not getting across to the players.. and we don't need to be mentally tough, we need to be bad to the bone physically tough. Our defense needs to play physical and not have to think about it. We need to play like the steelers defense..... We need to learn how to drive though an opponent when we tackle, and the team is poor at tackling now, but that is going to change. These are the kind of statements I want to hear form my head coach, not we need to be mentally tough. what the heck does that mean anyway.

Just a few thing that tick me off about Herm Edwards and why I think he is a poor coach for any team , little lone my team....

January 19, 2009  07:08 AM ET

Please hire Bud Foster D coordinator for Virginia Tech...Top Ten defense every year, I'm telling you this guy can coach a defense..heck he would even make a better head coach than (Mr No Emotion) on the side lines. GO HOKIES!!

January 19, 2009  07:10 AM ET

Hire Bud Foster (Virginia Tech D Co.) and watch how good this defense can be. Top Ten defense every year and either #1 or #2 last year. Go Hokies!!

January 19, 2009  07:11 AM ET

OOPPSS!

January 19, 2009  12:45 PM ET

TechMan, Foster might be a good candidate for the college HC position or even a a coordinator position in the NFL, but you don't take a college coordinator and make him the Head Coach in the NFL. It just doesn't happen.

Well here is another wave in the ocean of unknowns concerning K.C.'s Coach. Chris Collinsworth stated that he thinks that the Cardinals offensive coach ,Haley, is going to be the next chiefs head coach. He stated that Pioli and Haley were on the Jets together, and Pioli is very high on the young coach and his ability to get a team headed in the right direction. The story is also in the Kansas City Star's sports section. Well what do you think, as I personally don't know a thing about Haley, but hay , can he do worse than Hermenator

January 28, 2009  02:51 PM ET

I just saw on Sports Center that Haley will more than likely be head coach of the Raiders, and not the Chiefs....thank god.

February 3, 2009  11:09 PM ET

Just as long as Herm is gone, the team stands a chance of winning football games. I would like to see the Chiefs organization actually win a championship. Imagine that??? Hmmm Maybe next time we will hire a winning coach. Shanahan or Cower either coach works for me. Maybe next season I won't be embarrased to wear my Chiefs jersey anymore. Someone get some blocking for Johnson please. Maybe Cower can bring back what the Chiefs fans love the most. An explosive offense and a solid ground attack.

February 3, 2009  11:45 PM ET

Tod Haley will be our coach. Cable is the Raiders coach. He will be our coach and bring a few very good and also young assistants with him. An even more interesting and important question is who is going to be our special teams coach? This is important because we need our special teams play to once again be where it once was. We need a burner, agile, and complete playmaker as a return specialist.

Todd Haley will be our coach and he'll bring with him some young and good assistants. The important question is who is going to be our special teams coach? That's something that needs to be addressed and a burner for a returner is needed.

February 4, 2009  05:23 PM ET

Let's not get ahead of ourselves Chiefsdm09. If Haley gets the job, he will have his work cut out for him. He will need to decide...

Coaching Questions
1. Will Haley call his own plays on offense?
2. Who will be the defensive coordinator?
3. Will the Chiefs run a 3-4 defense or stick with the 4-3?
4. Will Russ Grim or any other big name coach come with Haley from Arizona? (Assistant HC / Offensive Coordinator?)
5. Who will be the team's next Quarterback's coach?
6. Who will be the next Special Team's coach?

Player & Personnel Questions
1. What to do with Larry Johnson (trading his salary won't be easy).
2. What to do with Tony Gonzalez?
3. Fix the O-Line, Defense or add instant star power through the draft? (you have to build an O-Line first!)
4. Who will be this team's leader at QB? (and don't say Thigpin!)
5. Will they build through free agency at all? (Shaun McDonald, Jordan Gross, Terrell Suggs, Karlos Dansby & Dunta Robinson are all people that are young and can help the Chiefs longterm.)
6. Which old players will finally be casted off the team? (Donnie Edwards, Patrick Surtain, Damien McIntosh, Napoleon Harris, Damon Huard, & Brody Croyle would all be good choices!)

All of that being said, you're absolutely right... special teams is very important. It's just that this team has a lot of holes right now and they have to begin building in areas that make the most amount of sense (O-Line, QB, DE, LB, CB, WR). The great Chiefs teams of old had good special teams units because of their depth. Dante Hall would have been forced to be the #2 wide receiver had he played for Herm last year. The Chiefs have no depth. Once they build the team and add depth, the special teams unit will improve.
