Soccer  > General Soccer  > Can MLS ever rival the top European Leagues, and does it have to for the US national team to be a success?

Hey I'm new to the site, but as a guy who only watches European football, I'm intrigued about the MLS.

Is its purpose just to make money like the NFL etc.? Does it want to increase the standard of US soccer? Does it matter?

I would like to see a more competitive US national team, hell, you've got enough people, but I don't see you doing it until the MLS becomes a better quality league, and create stronger links with Europe and South America. I don't see the college system as working. Guys are playing against others who won't even become pro until they're 21/22. Elsewhere, these guys would be turning pro at 17/18. Thats 4 years of pro experience and still have the athletic ability.

I'd just like to know what US fans think of MLS and how it compares to even English Championship standard, seen as you've now got Darren Huckerby!
