NCAAF  > Penn State Nittany Lions  > Pre-game ESPN show for Penn State Nebraska game
November 14, 2011, 10:41 AM
Were we the only people in the country to notice the shocking announcer comment at the start of ESPN pregame show for Penn State versus Nebraska??? The players were in a pregame cheer, rocking side to side, in about 7 rows of circles one inside the other, tightly scrummed and the announcer says something to the effect of, "where's the young boy?" There was then a long awkward silence before the announcer's partner ignored the comment and started discussing the game. We interpreted his apparently crude, heartless comment to mean that the victim could be expected to be in the midst this team display. We looked at each other in astonishment at the potential repercussions of this gaffe and waited for ESPN to come on and do damage control and apologize and/or cover up the comment. When neither happened, I e-mailed ESPN to ask for an explanation and called as well. After holding for a long time the ESPN rep said yes, they were aware of what was said and weren't commenting at this point. Susan and Marty Garofalo
