Did the suggestion that Jose Oquendo was AP's preferred managerial candidate ultimately cost Oquendo the job?

I believe it compromised him as an "independent" thinker and portrayed him as a puppet, trait no one wants in a manager.

I agree with you.....I don't think it helped at all. I'm very happy with the choice of Matheny, but you may be onto something. Oquendo as AP's choice took on a life of it's own a little bit. If they give the job to Oquendo and Albert still leaves.......they are left looking like they picked a manager they didn't want, whether that was true or not.

Maybe they thought Pujols would have too much control over Oquendo
