NFL  > General NFL  > Who are your contenders?

I think the picture is much clearer in the NFC. The AFC will make your head spin. So I am focussing on the NFC..

The fudge Packers are clearly the favored team right now, but don't underestimate what a good defense and a solid running game can do for you when you don't turn the ball over at the same time as causing turnovers on defense.

This is why I think the Niners would at least keep the game close against GB. But they are not the only contenders. You never know what N.O. can bring come playoff time, they are up and down right now, but the peices are there for them to make a run. I am not sold on ATL, but they will challenge DET and CHI for that 6th spot. And both DET and CHI can pose a legit threat to either the Packers or the 49ers in the playoffs.

You like the Giants out of the east, but (hold on, I'm about to puke) Dallas seems to be getting better and better as the year moves on with a nice boost from the running game. Truth is, we don't know how good OR how bad this team will be until they put together a reliable streak. When they win, they're the greatest, when they lose, they suck according to the media that is.

So as it is, here are my top contenders from the NFC, teams with an* I belive to be SB threats,I give GB 2 ** others are simply Playoff contenders.

1 seed GB**
2 seed SF*
3 seed NYG* (They have surprised us before)
4 seed NO*
5 seed Chicago
6 seed Detroit

Outside looking in will be Dallas, which would not shock me to see them in there because Detroit still has 2 games vs the Packers, Though Detroit would hold the tie-breaker over Dallas should they finish with the same record.

And Atlanta which I don't think is a solid team right now. But we'll see.

You people are leaving out the number one defense in the league, Yes, the Houston Texans...I just think a bitchin ass defense is what wins it this year!

I just chimed in about the NFC. The AFC is a mess and you are right. People are overlooking the Texans, but thats not so much a bad thing for them.

There was a preseason thread; Pick a team that would surprise and make the playoffs, a team that hadn't been there the season before or previous 2+ seasons. I picked Houston but everyone said: "Are your crazy, the Colts will win the South Division and Houston will be a distant 2nd and not even make it as a wild card- Houston hasn't wrapped it up because Tennessee is keeping it close. Houston has a 1.5 game lead over Tennessee going into their bye week, after their bye week they will either have a 1 game lead or 2 game lead over Tennessee who plays @ Atlanta. Atlanta is a team that is fighting for their playoff life, the team that loses will probably not make the playoffs. Houston has a slightly easier schedule left along with a rematch with Tennessee in Houston.

The Giants have a harder schedule in November than does Dallas. At the end of November Dallas may be a game ahead of the Giants. It will then come down to December when these 2 teams will play each other 2X, will Dallas slump in December?

Who knows about Detroit? Their last 7 games include Green Bay 2X, NO, Oak, SD.

Chicago has a easier schedule in that they play SD,Oak, GB.

Unless Detroit plays some powerful football they may not even make the playoffs.

New Orleans- has a bye this week then they will play back to back NYG and Det at home. They are still in that first round bye race in NFC with GB, SF, NYG.
