MLB  > General MLB  > Zack Grienke signs a 4 year deal with Royals
January 26, 2009, 05:36 PM
The Kansas City Royals agreed to terms with Zack Grienke today on a 4 year, $38 million deal. Grienke is expected to be the club's ace after going 13-10 with a 3.47 era last season. Grienke is 24 years old and is expected to become an All-Star pitcher at some point. This a step in the right direction for the Royals. Grienke is home grown and was the organization's first round draft pick in 2002. The last time the Royals had talent like this, they had to ship it off for prospects because ownership wouldn't spend money to keep them. I think its safe to say that GM Dayton Moore has the full support of ownership and has done an excellent job locking down the team's best pitching prospects (Grienke & Soria).

Can the Royals compete for the division title in 2009? Will the additions of Mike Jacobs (1b, 32 HRs in 08), Coco Crisp (CF .283 AVG, 20 SBs in 08), Utility man Willie Bloomquist & relievers Doug Waechter / Kyle Farnsworth be enough to push this team from fourth to first? The White Sox got worst and the Twins stood pat. Is there finally hope for my Royals? Could this be the year we finally compete? Will Billy Butler, Alex Gordon and Zac Grienke finally become the man childs they've all been built up to be? I'm hoping and praying that this G.M. might be close to bringing us close to respectability again. Its spring and I still have hope. Anything can happen!
