MMA  > General MMA  > Gilbert "The Hurricane" Yvel Set To Make Light Heavyweight Debut Tonight
December 16, 2011, 02:01 PM
If there has ever been a fighter who's legacy has been being taken down and dominated physically on the ground by big wrestlers, it is Pride and UFC veteran Gilbert Yvel. Josh Barnett, Ben Rothwell, Kazyuki Fujita, and most recently (and most embarrassingly) Jon Madsen.

Having had a very poor run in the UFC's heavyweight division last year, Yvel is doing the classic "drop a weight class to reinvent your career" move. Yvel weighed in for his last UFC fight in October 2010, the aforementioned loss to Madsen, at 249 pounds.

After taking a year layoff Yvel has taken the dietary measures to come in at 205 in what appears the best shape of his career for his light heavyweight debut tonight, against some guy you've never heard of in Nebraska.

What do you guys think about this move? Yvel is still a damn powerhouse, he was always a physically strong heavyweight, even if his ground technique is lacking. This is the guy who swept "Big" Ben Rothwell with an Americana. The only man to outstrike him is the reigning UFC HW Champion Junior Dos Santos, and arguably Igor Vovchanchyn back in Pride.

Can Yvel re-design himself at 205? I have always thought he was underrated due to the extreme level of competition he has faced, and I think he might be able to make a splash at the Strikeforce type level at 205 pounds.

C, what card is this on? I can't imagine Yvel cutting to 205.

Him at 205 he must look like he got one huge head

His head does look huge. He put this pic up on twitter this today:

Resurrection Fighting Alliance apparently.

With this win Yvel notched his 32nd career TKO win, second only to Travis Fulton, and 3 in front of Igor Vovchanchyn.

I saw the results last night but didn't see the fight.

I'm sure it will be online at some point.
