NFL  > Green Bay Packers  > BOYCOTT USA Today, and others

It has come to many following the death of Michael Philbin (son of Joe Philbin, Green Bay Packers Offensive Coordinator) that several news organizations (USA Today to name one) have listed this man's PAST discretion's (sex offenses against minors) at the end of their postings. I would like to ask EVERYONE to post NEGATIVE remarks against these news organizations that have stated such remarks. A person(s) PAST discretion's has NO BEARING on this persons final disposition, and should NEVER have been included in the facts of his disappearance. In the many who have written to USA Today, and other news outlets, we find this to be insensitive, and OUTRAGOUS, that these people would EXPLOIT a young mans untimely death REGARLESS of his circumstances. I suggest that if YOU have the time to respond, that you write a NEGATIVE comment to those news corps that mention ANYTHING about this mans PAST judicial history. What happened 2 YEARS ago should have no bearing on what transpired that evening until the investigation is concluded. It sickens ALL that view this as a PERSONAL FAMILY tragedy, and nothing more. If YOU see ANYONE writing about this young mans PAST transgressions, respond with NEGATIVE comments AGAINST that news organization, and inform them that YOU find their rhetoric offensive, and a NON news issue. THANK YOU!!!

USA Today...(amongst others) the nations constipated news DUMP!

Their job is to report the news, and it's part of the details. Maybe this young man was murdered? Maybe he didn't just "fall" in? That "past discretion" is a detail maybe people should know. ESPN, Fox, ABC, SI.... they all reported pretty much the same thing. Are you going to boycott all of them?

10 bucks says your local news paper reported it too. It's what they do.

As long as they are reporting factual information that's what the media should do.

January 11, 2012  08:53 AM ET

You're right. It is the job of the news media is to be objective and report the facts, if the reporting were slanderous then I'm sure the family does not need our boycotting of the paper, they will due more damage by suing them . Wisconsin is letting his emotions for his team get in the way.

Green Bay -- Michael Philbin, the 18-year-old son of Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, was sentenced Thursday morning to 6 months in jail for having non-consensual sex with two girls who had been drinking heavily at a party he threw while his parents were out of town last summer.

Both terms will be served concurrently, meaning Philbin could be out in 4 months. After that, Philbin will have to comply with a strict probation term of 30 months that will include counseling. He will not be able to leave the state during that time.

The sentence was a result of a joint recommendation by both the defense and prosecuting attorneys. Brown County Circuit Judge Sue Bischel followed the recommendations after Philbin changed his not-guilty pleas to each of the four counts. Philbin pled no contest to each of the four counts on Thursday.

Both Joe Philbin and his wife, Diane, were present in the courtroom during sentencing. Neither spoke during the session, but both broke down into tears on several occasions. Joe Philbin declined to comment after the sentence was handed down.

Stephen Glynn, one of Michael Philbin's attorneys, said the Philbin household has been a perpetual "house of sorrow" since the assaults took place.

Philbin apologized to the victims in a short prepared statement, saying he was "sorry for his actions" and "for what I put them through."

Bischel said from the pre-sentencing reports she was given, Philbin was a good person who came from a good family, but one who "did a horrible thing."

Despite pleas from the parents of both victims, Bischel declined to have Michael Philbin listed as a sex offender. She left it open for his record to be expunged if he successfully completes his probation

Not that it matters now but it seems he got preferential treatment not being listed as a sex offender. Still feel for the parents in all this though.

absolutely...his parents have been devistated.

Hopefully they are blunt.

QUOTE(#14):

To be clear, the incident for which he was convicted of sexual assault occurred when he was 17 and the girls were 16. There are other details available, but that's not for this forum, nor am I suggesting anything. I wanted to point that out, is all.

We'd need to build a continent size prison if we convicted (of what I don't know, being human maybe?) everyone in that age range.

January 11, 2012  12:51 PM ET

age has nothing to do with his crime......rAPE IS A CRIME OF VIOLENCE....getting girls wasted to have sex with them withiout their consent is cowardice, illegal, and shows lack of empathy (sociopath) Vanslooter types are everywhere these days. I would imagine drugs may have been involved as well.I don't believe this was a kid who just got carried away, or was drunk himself. I have been reading a bit about the case.
