NCAAB  > General NCAAB  > Coaches on the hot seat

With Mark Gottfried's resignation at Alabama being the first domino to fall, which coaches do you think are on the hot seat right now? Who'll start looking for work between now and April?

I don't want to jump the gun on this one, but with Notre Dame starting to vastly underachieve in the heavyweight conference that is the Big East, I think Mike Brey will start to see his seat get hotter if they don't play better. Let's face it, Brey does have one of the longer tenured coaching positions in the Big East, but he hasn't done too much in his nine seasons at the helm. Not to mention, with the talent he has right now with Harangody, McAlarney, Jackson (underrated in my opinion), and a pretty strong supporting cast with Zeller and Hillesland they should be playing much better. I don't like how Brey has underutilized his bench and explore it for a deeper team. They seem to be running out of gas in the second half and that corresponds directly with lack of bench input.

I'm not calling for him to lose his job this year, but in the near future Notre Dame might be looking to shuffle things up a little bit..

I know one coach that is definately on the hot seat, coach sidney lowe at North Carolina State. What has he done since taking over a program that was coming off 5 consecutive NCAA tournament births? He has had some good runs in the ACC tournament and he is an NIT all-star but NC State fans cannot be satisfied with this! A school with such rich traditions in collegiate basketball how can this be acceptable. They ran Herb Sendek out of town only after he had turned around a program that was in the tank after a few seasons with Les Robinson. They did not like Sendek because he could not compete with UNC or Duke, but how many basketball programs can boast winning records against either of these schools. I think the Raleigh faithful are going to be screaming loud before this year is over....NC State needs to spend some money and get a big-time coach!!!

How long can Paul Hewitt hang on at Georgia Tech? yes he went to the Final Four a few years agao, but he has wone NO games in the ACC as of yet this year! Time for a change.

Is Bob Knight powerful enough to keep his son Pat in the job at TT?

Gary Williams of Maryland. I think he very well be fired/retired at the end of the season. He hasn't been making the NCAA tournament regularly in recent times, looks like he won't this year, and have been very average in the ACC over the last few seasons. Additionally, Maryland suffered a particularly embarrassing 41 point loss to Duke on national tv a couple weeks back. At one point the score was like 64-20 or something.

Realistically, every coach in the ACC except the Pole (Duke), the Jew (Virginia Tech), the Italian (Wake), and Roy the Boy (North Carolina) should be on the hot seat. I would argue that every single other coach in the league is average, below average, or flat poor in terms of the X and O's of the game. I'd even say that the jury is still out on Gaudio, although he's a massive upgrade from Prosser (great recruiter, terrible coach). No one plays even a modicum of defense, and shot selection in the league is laughable. Really, with the kind of recruiting advantages you have in the ACC there's no excuse for winning a certain amount if you play even somewhat fundamentally sound. Actually, as of now, doing that would likely land you in the top 5 of conference and put you in the big dance even without amazing talent (just ask Seth Greenberg).

There are too many good coaches out there to employ X & O clowns at schools where recruiting is relatively easy.

COACHING WISH LIST if I were an Athletic Director at an ACC school (firing their coach) or Arizona (hiring):

Jamie Dixon (Pitt), Tony Bennett (Washington St.), Doc Sadler (Nebraska), Tubby Smith (Minnesota), Rick Majerus (St. Louis).

Pat Knight isn't but should be. Like father like son? I'm not sure college basketball can stand another decade of Knight bullies on the sideline - a distinct possibility if dad goes to Georgia. Pat Knight acted like a thug this week because he could, and because he's seen his dad do it for years without any repercussions. Now might be a good time for Texas Tech, the Big 12, and the NCAA to change his behaviour by putting him on the hot seat.
