NFL  > Chicago Bears  > NFC Semi's once again ball control beats bombs away!!!
January 16, 2012, 12:12 AM
For anyone who only wants to have a passing dominated offense, these two games should teach a lesson. Ball control works. No if's ands or buts about it. Sure passing attack teams win some, but the majority of times it's ball control that wins the day. Especially when playing on a natural field and in the cold. For these reasons this is why I think the Bears are on the right track with Lovie's and Tice's offensive philosophy. GO BEARS!!!

This shows to me (The lack of response to this thread.) one of the things WRONG with the NFL. Fans want excitement NOT WINS. If you want fast scoring action go play Fooseball/pingpong or watch/play basketball. The NFL is chess with men. Strategy with excitement. (Unlike baseball which is 5 minutes of action stretched into 3 hours.) GO FOOTBALL, GO NFL, GO BEARS!!!

I love foosball . . . but no spinning the players, please!

But as for the topic, my theory is that pass happy teams can get away with it most of the time in the regular season. But you can go back decades and find a whole lot of pass happy teams who were brought to their knees in a playoff game when they ran up against a top defense, coupled with a balanced offense. In that regard, history does seem to repeat itself.

Personally I believe in a good balance, passing offenses can put points on the board and can be dangerous teams, the NFL with several of it's rule changes are favoring, leaning or steering if you will the way of offensive minded teams.

The rule changes with regards to roughing the passer and hitting defenseless W.R.'s C.B.'s no contact after five yards etc. all these rules help offenses. Looking around the league passing teams has had more success recently IE the Patriots, Saints, Packers, Colts even the Steelers has gone a little more the way of the passing game with Big Ben vs the way they used to pound Bettis at teams. Having said all that I still feel a balanced attack is best vs a prominent run oriented or passing oriented offense.

Most fans love exciting, high scoring games. If you like strategy then go play a game of chess.

Unfortunately defense takes a back seat in most fans minds, just like a pitchers duel seems to bore people in baseball (yeah I know baseball bores people anyway).

Hard to figure, you need low scoring games to make high scoring games interesting, you know good with bad, ying with yang etc.

The Patriots are a fun team to watch with their high scoring offense. The Ravens, Niners and Giants have been successful with a more boring defensive approach. I'm picking the Patriots to win the Super bowl.

January 18, 2012  10:34 PM ET

I'm going to go all out and say I think the 49rs will win it all. Either them or the Ravens, but I prefer the 49rs. With those two teams in the Super Bowl. Fooseball is one of the fastest most exciting games I've ever played. Spinning is illegal, but for it to be spinning that means it must make TWO complete revolutions. Ie 720degrees. There are some people who will spin the man around 450degrees doing a shot that alot of people think is illegal but it is not. But the people who just spin and sping it is TOTALLY ILLEGAL and is penalized by ball in hand to the oposing team. Look it up in the rule book. I used to own one until someone who borrowed it decided they needed it more than me. The main problem with the game is how many people can actually see what it going on. I tried to talk a Bar owner into putting a camera into the light pointed down at the table, and set up one TV so it could be watched, but that idea went nowhere. A balanced attacking offense is every bit if not more as exciting to me as a pass dominated game. (60% or more.) A great runner like Barry Sanders is every bit as exciting to watch as Brett Farve etc. It also makes it so much more of a "Chess Match" The game of strategy of moving players who must think on their own is just exciting. Actually there are more possible moves on a Football field than on a chess board. The old addage of a game of inches is so true. The problem comes when the 3 yards and a cloud of dust type of game is played. That is very boring. However I have watched Barry Sanders etc on the edge of my seat in a low scoring game just waiting and expecting him to break a big one at any instant. High scoring or low scoring, to me it's a good game if someone can win it with the last drive of the game. I hate those when the Bears are playing, but enjoy them when anyone else is playing. I hate it with the Bears games because I would rather win by 20 points and not have the game in doubt. lol. Especially against the Packers!!! GO BEARS!!!

Sorry about that guys, I tried to break it into three paragraphs and totally messed up. I will try to do better in the future.

Foosball is a great game. As is shuffleboard. But actually, you cannot spin the rods 720 degrees (unless you are not touching the ball, and even then it might be ruled a "distraction.") Foosball 101 . . .

The official United States Table Soccer Association rule (Rule 13) states:

"Spinning of the rods is illegal. Spinning is defined as the rotation of any soccer figure more than 360 degrees before or after striking the ball. In calculating the 360 degrees, you do not add the degrees spun prior to striking the ball to the degrees spun after striking the ball."

As you stated, some people spin it 450 degrees. You can spin it 700 degrees, so long as you strike the ball half way through the stroke. 350 degrees before, 350 after, for instance. But you can NEVER make a full revolution and then strike the ball after 360, or hit the ball and then make greater than one revolution after the strike.

And an illegal spin does not result in automatic "ball-in-hand." The rule states that the non-offending team has an option:

"A ball which is advanced by an illegal spin is replayed as follows:
If the ball goes in the goal, then it will not be counted as a point and will be put back into play by the goalie as if the ball had been declared a dead ball between the goal and the nearest two-man rod.
If the ball does not go in the goal, the opposing team will have the option of continuing play from the current position or re-serving the ball.

Spinning of a rod which does not advance and/or strike the ball does not constitute an illegal spin. If a player's spinning rod hits the ball backwards into his own goal, it will count as a goal for the opposing team. Spinning of a rod away from the ball (when there is no possession) is not considered an illegal spin, but may be ruled as a distraction."

Who needs playoff football, when we can have a great FOOSBALL game??? Btw, went to Holland once...recommend not playing foosball there for money...I think they are born with foosball tables in their cribs. They are masters of the spin-but-not-illegal-spin you referred to. It's all about the wrists.Accelerate through the ball and then "put on the brake before you violate." Haha.

Ripper, you did an excelent job of interpriting the rules. Everything looks perfect as I saw it. It's been too long since I read the exact rules, please forgive my mistakes. But I was sure of the ball in hand rule. Sorry I guess my 50+ year old brain is slipping again. But I can still school some of the "Children". lol

I have played several over seas men who came to town to work in the world wide company in the area. Watch out for their snake/toe shot, it's deadly. But if you can stop it with agressive goalie play usually they don't have the complete game after that. Some people do this toe shot with their wrist, and others do it with their hand. Then there are the semi spin shots that are to me the hardest to stop. I'm more of a push-pull-pass shot goalie. Just watch out for someone who wraps the handles and oils the rods! lol. All are fun to learn and practice.

I hate to say it, but Fooseball is my favorite sport. (Foootball, Chess, and then Basketball after that.) Fooseball is such an exciting game. Nothing has it's instant excitement. We would play a fast hard game which would have most people sweating like crazy in just minutes. When the eventual slow down players come then it becomes instantaneous skill and the pressure just goes CRAZY! GO BEARS!!!
