NFL  > St. Louis Rams  > We Need Defense
January 28, 2009, 03:59 PM
With Spagnuolo being our new coach, I hope that he brings some of his
knowledge from the Giants with him to St. Louis. Particularly, Spagnuolo
should realize how important defense and special teams can be to create
success. The Giants have a tremendous captain of Sepcial Teams in Chase
Blackburn, an LB from Akron. Akron also has an undervalued LB in this
draft, *Kevin Grant*. He could boost our LB core and Special Teams.
Thoughts?

Yeah, we do need defense that is for sure. But our needs go way beyond just that. We need an O'line too or having a top notch defense won't do any good at all. We could get caught in terminal overtime where they can't score and neither can we! :)

Defensive Identity presence (can anyone please clone ole what's-his-name linebacker from the Ravens). Offensive line, gotta have it. Honest to god fullback plowing the road for Jackson (can you say Hedgecock?).

I'm kind of torn between big moves or smart "tweaks". We finally got rid of the front office that couldn't spell "quality draft" with a spell-checker so at least we won't have to worry about THAT again this year.

I'm gonna wait and see before I run out and pay for the satellite NFL package....

i bet god would be a good full back

I truly believe defense wins championships. But the 2000 Raven's defense couldn't win with the 2008 Ram's offense that averaged 14.5 points per game. There's just simply NO O-line. Pace is getting old and multiple injuries have taken their toll on him. Jacob Bell was a disappointment. Incognito has a screw loose. Alex Barron aka "Mr. False Start" is a drive killer, and both centers are way too small. I'm also beginning to wonder if Bulger could hit the broad side of a barn anymore. Two years of brutal hits have messed him up bad. Holt is on a fast downward slide and wants out of STL. And don't look for Klop to get open over the middle. There's no fullback. The ONLY bright spots on offense are "hold-out" Jackson and new receivers Avery and Burton. What a mess! Drafting one stud O-Lineman just won't make much difference. We need replacements all around on offense. Regarding defense, one would've thought in 2008 that with Little, Carriker and Long, the D-Line would be stomping QB's. But all these guys under-performed. An extra sack per game could've won 3-4 more games for STL in 2008. Other than Otogwe, Bartell and Witherspoon, the rest of the defense is suspect or just plain bad. So basically, the Rams have a great kicking/punting game, a good running back, two speedy receivers and about 4-5 decent defensive players to work with heading into the 2009 draft. I just don't see anyway for STL to be competitive in 2009. The Cards are Super Bowl calibre, the 49ers are vastly improved and the SeaHawks are at least a step above the Rams.

Yeah well.....other than Steven Jackson, I think you need offense too! Good thing you dumped Warner all those years ago.....for.....oh yeah, BULGER. Bulger's been in the league almost as long as McNabb & Warner, and AS LONG as Tom Brady (who no one ever expected anything from). When is everyone going to realize that Marc Bulger ( A good Backup) is NOT a consistant starting NFL QB?

Well the Rams need help everywhere if the rams just find some linebackers and good corner they will be good. and just bring out the best in little and long

It's a foregone conclusion that the rams need to fill alot of holes. The new regime has, in my opinion done a great job so far with what was available in the free agency market, and parted ways with some of the players that we needed to part with. Pace and Holt were exceptional and I hated to see them go no matter how neccessary the moves seemed to be. BUT business is business and we do want to win so....The upcoming draft does however pose some food for thought. Alot of holes and not too many draft choices in the upper echelon of the draft stages. Hence I will submit my three cents worth of ideas...trade down our first choice to Cleveland who are widely believed to covet Aaron Curry, for their first and second rounders. Having done that draft the next best linebacker, not really much of a drop off, from USC in Ray Mauluga, who is by some estimates, cast in the mold of such vaunted warriors as Junior Seau, Ray Lewis and Shawn Merriman to name a few. Fiery team leaders who elevated the play of those around them. This is needed because in my opinion the defense must come first in order to win championships while still allowing us to draft high enough, and with an extra pick from Cleveland in the second round draft a high caliber OT with our pick and a speedy wide reciever with our back-to-back picks in this round. We sometimes can be enamored with a high draft choice that we seem to forget sometimes that there are more holes in the dike than we have fingers. I hope the new regime sees the value in such an action in order to fascilitate and expedite a winning team. We've had too many years of idiotic moves in the draft and i for one am tired of being on a sinking ship, though i will never abandon it. What say you my fellow horn heads?

well I just read that the Giants want to trade up to draft a wide receiver. I want the Rams to trade down as well .We need players, not one for all the money.Trade the pick to the giants for there 1st and both of there 2nd round picks.(they got one from the saints in the shockey trade). That will give them for picks the first two rounds.DRAFT rb, tackle, corner,qb.They are rebuilding mode know and with the right coaching staff,we have a better chance of being the big suprise this year.

I guess we do need some Offensive fire power Bulgar just seems to have a weak arm his long ball always falls short and just one three and out after the other. But again with good coaching Bulgar could be just fine. But trade down that Cleveland deal seems to be a good move it would get us a step further it may not end up being the Dallas ,Viking trade but who knows.
