Trade Peppers for Cassel. We need a QB and the Patriots run a 3-4 Defense and are in need of a DE. Win- Win!
January 29, 2009  08:10 PM ET

We're actually all set at DE with Seymour and Warren but could really use a safety who brings it or a stud inside linebacker...Wanna talk?

February 2, 2009  10:12 AM ET

I think that will be a good move because Matt Cassel is a great guy and could end up being a franchise QB and he probably could come in games like the one against Arizona and end up taking over when Jake was struggling so much. I still have faith in Jake and I really like Pep alot but I don't think we can afford him.

February 2, 2009  11:28 AM ET

I fear Cassel is a product of a system ......sort of like any QB out a spread offense or from USC (humm....Cassel). Jake's painfully inconsistancy does need to be addressed, but not sure Cassel is the answer.

Peppers, frankly, pisses me off. He wants a diferent "system"?! WHAT! He IS NOT a 3-4 DE, what else does he want?

February 3, 2009  10:20 PM ET

i like the idea cassell would flourish with us because he would have two good running backs and two good recievers. and peppers doesnt wanna be 3-4 DE he wants to be like LT and joey porter and rush as a linebacker. he would be filthy as a rush linebacker who occaisionaly uses his freakish skills in coverage...

Jake has to go!!!!He has caused us too much heartache and 5 interceptions is too much. After the 3rd interception he should have been benched. Only thing that we are missing to get us over that hump to win a SuperBowl is a quarterback. Jake is not consistent and doesnt deliver the ball to everyone he tries to force it to Steve Smith.

February 5, 2009  08:25 PM ET

That would be an awesome trade, but I wonder if the Pats are going to even let him go.

I'm pretty sure that Delhomme isn't the reason we haven't won a super bowl. If you want proof, look at his post-season numbers. 2003 - completion pct. 57.8%, 6 TD, 1 INT. That is a 106.1 passer rating. 2005 - completion pct. 60%, 5 TD, 4 INT. That could be because that was the year we lost almost every running back we had in the playoffs so Delhomme threw more. All of that is an 82.4 passer rating. Delhomme isn't the reason we haven't won a super bowl. This year, sure you can blame it on him, but he has performed pretty well in the post season. FYI - in the one super bowl we did play in...323 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT. Year, We can blame that super bowl loss on him. I don't like the Cassell for Peppers trade. We need to get some high draft picks by franchising and trading Peppers. We could go for Orakpo out of Texas in the draft or go for a DE in free agency.

I would worry that Cassel is a system QB. Would still be better than Jake though. He would throw it to more then S. Smith which is a major improvement. Pepper's seems to take too many plays off to trade for. NE would do good to get a safety or DB.

That would be a great move for the Panthers offense...young guy with experience....we already know what he can do but I don't know if the Patriots wil let him go especially since they don't know how effective Brady is going to be.......but we should diff. take a look into it. Peppers is already said he don't want to be here anymore and I don't want a guy to play here if is not willing to perform at his full potiential......Go Panthers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Peppers wouldn't fit a 3-4 defense, he is too small.

That's funny....I wasn't aware that 6'7" and 290+ lbs. was small. I live in NC, and have been to the Panther's training camp and Peppers runs his sprints with the WR's and DB's...not the D-line. I think he's got perfect size, speed, and strength for a 3-4 defense.

what do u mean we already know what cassell can do? 1 yr under your belt doesnt mean anything.

I love this trade. If Peppers wants out, let him be out. We can't make him stay. We have good upcoming stars (Johnson and Brayton) that will be effective. It will be a loss, but not as bad as some people think. And as far as Cassel, this would make us go over the hump. He has great vision and makes all the receivers better. We will be unstoppable!!! Besides, the Patriots still have Brady and they will be contenders. It's a win-win situation. Let's get it Panthers!!!

You're right, 6'7" and 290+ lbs is a GREAT size for DE. And his size and speed combo is unbelievable. But it does not fit into a 3-4 scheme where the DL is asked to hold the line and allow the LBs to make plays. Speed is not as big as asset for a 3-4 DE as strength. Hence, his thoughts of playing OLB in a 3-4. Sounds like he wants the glory without the hard work. I think he is too big (and too unmotivated) to play with the constant high motor required of a 3-4 LB. HOWEVER, if he can do it .....HOLY CRAP! He would be terrifying! IF he could pull it off (may be more feasible if he dropped to about 270), he would have the potential to make LT a very distant memory.

Still believe Cassell is a product of Patriots system.

6'-7" 283lbs. is not too small for 3-4 DE. It might be small for nose tackle but not end.

Please hurry up and trade him, so I don't have to hear about trading for QB's any more!

March 1, 2009  03:47 PM ET

Well, I got my wish - although it was Cassell, and not Peppers.

March 1, 2009  06:32 PM ET

I guess you missed the memo.

I don't think I would trust Cassell just yet. Let's all be real honest for a moment, and remember that he played for the New England Patriots, a year removed from their perfect season. The team was all pretty much the same, so of course Cassell would be successful. The only way we're going to really find out if he is the real deal is after seeing him on the Chiefs. Plus, to trade Julius Peppers, a proven veteran, arguably the best DE of this age, for a 1-year sophomore QB who is practically living with his parents he's so protected by his team, would be outrageous. Trade Peppers for another D-lineman, maybe Shaun Rogers, and a 2009 1st round draft pick. I say '09, because '08's selection is thin after the top picks. Maybe they get lucky and land Colt McCoy, or Sam Bradford (if the Browns totally tanked of course), and have a certain QB of the future
