NFL  > Chicago Bears  > Bears Hire Bates finally!
February 7, 2012, 01:33 PM
It's about time and I like this hire and think/hope Bates and Tice can make a good pair of offensive play callers. I hope they don't butt heads on the play calling duties and it works out, Bates and Cutler worked well together in Denver let's all hope that connection can be rekindled in Chicago, now to get Cutler some protection and weapons and I'm a little excited to see the results.

I'm not sure if Emery had anything to do with this or not as it's hard to tell with him just being brought in but if he did then I would say it would be Emery's second impact move since joining the Bears, the first being the firing of Ruskell.

Let's all hope Emery and the Bears can get Cutler some protection and weapons in the upcoming free agency and Draft and hope Phillips keeps his nose where it belongs and lets Emery do his job.

There does seem to be some confusion with the Bears hiring Bates and no mention of passing game coordinator in their press release below, does that make Tice the running game Coordinator/O-Line coach and Bates the Passing Coordinator/Q.B. coach?

The exact phrasing is curious taken from the article below: "Jeremy Bates, who served as Jay Cutler's quarterbacks coach during Cutler's three seasons with the Denver Broncos from 2006-08, "has been hired by the Bears to fill the same role."

Bates joined the Denver Broncos in 2006. In his first season he served as an offensive assistant, helping offensive coordinator Rick Dennison coach the offensive line. In 2007 he served as wide receivers/quarterbacks coach, and in 2008 as quarterbacks coach, both seasons working closely with quarterback Jay Cutler. In 2008, Bates called the offensive plays for the Broncos, helping Cutler become a Pro Bowl selection and the team to have the NFL's second-most productive offense (1st in the AFC).

At the end of the 2008 NFL regular season, longtime head coach Mike Shanahan was fired and replaced by Josh McDaniels. Due to the uncertainty, Bates began looking for a new position.

I've read where Lovie has full control over his staff and coupled with Dickerson ESPN article I would half to say Lovie hired Bates and if anything might have ran the idea by Emery and Phillips but sounds like Lovies' hire from the article below and quoting Lovie's words.

"I did a lot of research, and I think Jeremy is a perfect fit. Did we look at other guys? Yes, we did. Every time we have an opening, I look at everybody available. I even waited to see who would be available so I could see what the pool really looked like. Even though we had only brought in one guy (former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Greg Olson), I had been talking to a lot of guys. But in the end, it was Jeremy by a landslide."

Smith interviewed Bates last week in Tampa, and Bates then flew to Chicago to meet with recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Tice, according to the website.

An encouraging development.

I wonder when Emery will address the status of Forte... If he can keep Forte in Chicago and keep both sides happy, that will make a lot of fans happy, too.

When I saw the title, "Bears Hire Bates Finally", I thought you meant Norman Bates.

I don't think from what Mike Tice has said, that the OL will be a priority in the Draft or FA. I think they will concentrate on WR, DE, CB and other backup positions. I think Tice thinks he can work with what he has and will drop our sacks by 1/2 with his style of play and play calling.

As far as Bates and Tice who calls the plays, I hope that for now until Bates learns the system, it is Tice who calls the plays. After Bates learns the plays though it's anyone's guess. I second the motion though of Jay and Bates doing good things together.

I feel that the new hirings are all good choices. Especially GM. I will be watching very closely who and what positons we get in the FA and draft. So far so GREAT!!! GO BEARS!!!

Statistically J'Marcus Webb was the worst LT in the NFL last year with 14 sacks allowed and 13 penalties, Jared Allen abused and embarrassed Webb all game long. If they hadn't started giving Webb help in the second half I imagine Allen would have broken Strahan's single season sack record over, the Bears O-line gave up 7 sacks in that game alone, 49 sacks in 2011 tells me Tice and the Bears need to rethink the potential of the O-Line. I understand Martzs scheme may have been to blame for some of the sacks but your an O-Linemen your job is to block and protect the Q.B. period.

There has been some conflicting reports J. Knox may not be fully recovered for the 2011 season, I pray for his recovery hope he can return but that was a horrific accident and anytime a player has neck or back injuries it usually shortens their careers. That leaves Bennett, Hester and Sanzenbacher at W.R. as I don't see Williams back so W.R. has to be a priority IMO.

The Bears do need a D.E. opposite Peppers and a C.B. opposite Tillman and you have to wonder about the Safety revolving door Lovie has had since Mike Browns departure. Conte and Wright could be the starting combo but injuries is a concern as the Bears have yet to make it a season with the same starting safety combo in years now. Steltz filled in rather well last year after the injuries to both Wright and Conte and I imagine Meriweather played his one and only season in Chicago.

Then there is the back up Q.B. spot as we seen last year Hanie is not the answer McCown did a decent job and I would imagine Enderle will stick for a prospect. It will be interesting to see what the Bears and Emery do here as some seem to think it was one of the reasons J.A. was let go and cost the Bears last season.

I am excited over the Bates hire and had hopes he would be the one to get the job as he and Cutler seem to work good together. Now have to give Cutler some protection and weapons and next season should be an interesting one, bring on free agency and the draft.

Forte is bull in the China shop right now as I hear he is seeking near C.J. money and don't see the Bears giving it. Franchise tag him would keep him another year and you have to wonder if that isn't the plan as it seems to be Phillips forced Emery to keep Lovie through the 2012 season and after that it's Emery's decision based upon how the 2012 season plays out. All the while stringing Forte along telling him they are working at a long term deal to keep him quiet and playing.
