Players were paid according to how bad they injured the play. $1500 for a "knockout" and $1000 for a "cart off". Allegations surfaced in 2010 that Saints players had targeted Kurt Warner and Brett Favre.

They're in trouble cause they got caught.

But... I would think a cart off would be worth more than a knock out!

I think the knock-out means out of the game not just unconscious... Plus the pay-out doubled or tripled during play-offs....

Ah... that makes more sense (as much sense as something like this can make anyway).

I wonder who the former player/coach is that brought all this to light. The article says they couldn't prove it when they investigated years ago, but due to new information brought to them recently they were able to make their case.

Also wonder what's going to happen in the front office if it's true that Benson ordered it to stop and Loomis didn't fulfill his request. Hmmmm.

Guilty parties, both players and coaches, should be banned lifetime from the NFL....there is no excuse for this.

Exactly, Not sure who came forward, but it seems that both the GM and coach Payton were aware of the program and did not take steps to stop it, The defensive coordinator Gregg Williams implemented the program with full knowledge of the other defensive coaches....

That is kind of harsh...

I think the Coach should be suspended for an entire year, and each player fined a game check.
Then this won't happen again.

I think we'd all be surprised how often this happens with every team...

I'm not surprised that Saints players tried to injure Favre. The 2009 NFC Championship game between the Saints & Vikings were full of cheap shots by Saints players on Favre. They susceeded in badly spraining his ankle.

This?Has been going on since the invention of the sport,1 old one Jerry Glanville of the Oilers did it,and i'm sure other pro coach's and players have done the same.

Didn't the Ravens get busted for this a few years back? Knowing me and my wonderful recollection of time, it was probably 10 years ago... ha!

The Chicago Bears were famous for cheap shots in the 70's.

The Bears used to have a coach named Abe Gibron that put a bounty on opponents he disliked.

No it is not harsh...you really think fining a player a game check will ensure this won't happen again? Maybe it has been going on since the invention of the sport, but it is time that it stops. The NFL is on the hotseat, being sued from all corners by players and player families (Duerson) because the league did not do enough to prtoect them from injuries. Coming down harshly is the ONLY way to ensure this won't happen again any time soon. Also, it may have been going on since theinvention of the game, just as videotaping has been going on against league rules since the invention of video camers, but just like the Patriots and there video cameras, the Saints were the ones who got caught.

It comes with the job, sorta like Suh.

This is an excellent point...there is enough natureal agression in the game that paid incentives shouldn't be needed.
