MMA  > General MMA  > Does Mir have ANY shot against Cain Velasquez?

I am a big fan of Frank Mir but this looks like a bad spot for him. He just has not been able to solve the heavy handed wrestler problem, as seen in the Lesnar and Carwin fights. I would really like to see him win this but I have a suspicion that Cain will handle him. Thoughts?

I think that this is a better fight for him than Shane was, but not much.

He has a far better submission game than Cain, and I think that Cain has somewhat sloppy transitions where he just grabs one underhook and blasts away. Look for Frank to have at least one solid sub attempt, but I expect Cain to eventually put big power on him standing up and get a TKO if Mir can't submit him.

Cain is rough....he could withstand the raw power of a weakened Lesnar but he's sloppy....Mir's technique could be the difference if Mir can avoid getting his clock cleaned....when Lesnar took Cain down, he relied on all power so he didn't go for Cain's heel to prevent Cain from popping right back up...Mir wouldn't be relying on power, and his technique would have blocked Cain from getting right back up...that isn't to say that Cain wouldn't be able to work his way over to the cage and work his way back up, but I don't see him just popping up like he managed to do against Lesnar....

Mir needs to stick to his bread and butter first. second, i wish he would train else where. xtreme Couture?
Mir needs to realize that he cant stand in front of Cain, and stop eating shots. If he gets hit, realize another one is coming. Carwin, and Big Nog both did it to him. Hes gotta set the pace!

When Mir is on his game, he's scary good. I just think he'll do what Nick Diaz is famous for... trying to fight the other guys fight to prove he can. If he tries to box with Cain, he's a goner. If he tries to pack Cain's arm in a suitcase and take it to the airport.. he'll be alright and I'd love nothing more than to see Cain tap. Something about him just gets under my skin.

Mir has a shot of course, but not a great one IMO. He's going to have to get this to the ground somehow. Maybe he can rock Cain standing and look for a sub from there. I expect this to not go the distance. Most likely a TKO by Cain or a Mir sub. 65% Cain TKO IMO though.

I think Mir has a distinct advantage in cardio...the longer the fight lasts, the better Mir's chances...but I suppose that is a no-brainer when a striker fights a grappler...but also, what happened to Cain? The man that lost to JDS wouldn't have beaten Lesnar...

Anybody has a chance, all it takes one shot at the right moment to win. But with that being said, I actually give Mir more of a chance then most people give. I think if he can work the ground, Mir has a chance of submission. If he stands in front of Cain, it will be a short night for Mir.

Actually, Cain has crazy cardio. I just think he was still injured when he fought JDS and didn't look 100% healthy. He was slow to react and just didn't seem explosive like his past fights. I actually give Cain the edge in Cardio giving the fact that Mir will get hit to slow him down.

Really? I think you meant Cain has the advantage?

what I meant is that as a striker, Cain is going to burn faster....if it goes to the ground Mir will be able to calmly move about without spending too much energy....

I don't know... Cain is said to be a cardio machine. Most of the AKA guys are. I think we can all agree that for Mir to pull this off, he HAS to get it to the ground no?

how did Cain become a striker?
He's a wrestler.
Besides, one of his strongest suits were his impecable cardio!

To think he will tire faster than Mir is preposterous!

I think Cain has very underrated kickboxing skills.

that does not make him a striker.
His game was never stand up with people and strike.
He takes people down and Gn'p them!

Cain would be very foolish to go to the ground with Mir. He should just ask Minotauro or Timmy.

True, but in this fight his gameplan will probably be to keep the fight on the feet. Why would he want to mess around in Mir's guard?

you have a point.
But I don't think Cain will change his game for Mir.

Mir "woke up" against Nog because Nog switched to a submission.
Cain would have continued punching Mir.
