NFL  > Dallas Cowboys  > Cowboys 2012 Offseason Moves
March 13, 2012, 06:29 PM
As of Tues night Dallas did precisely what many were speculating.

They cut Buehler and Newman, saving approx 8m in cap room.

They also restructured several contracts freeing up another 10-12m so far.

Dallascowboys.com is reporting that Brandon Carr and Kyle Orton are both on their way to visit and have the red carpet rolled out.

If JJ pulls off these 2 moves, that is an INSTANT upgrade over the aging Newman and Kitna.

Also, by signing both players, it allows Dallas to focus on the best player available in the draft rather than being tied down to need.

Hopefully JJ and company do not allow either to leave without a contract in hand.

For once, some of the pre-free agency rumors actually came true.

Carr & Orton?? It may be an upgrade but I dont' think it's much of an upgrade...

I agree Sweets, that's like switching from Boones Farm to Mogan David wine.

They save $6mill just with Newman. But they still need to build a defense. 3 quality players is not gonna get it done. JJ has lots of work to do. I guess he will have to miss his next facelift appt.

Another positive (actually addition by substraction) is saying good bye to Marty B. Don't let the door hit ya.

The sad thing is that JJ's son will inherit this franchise and he has learned NFL football from his inept father. We can expect more of the same uninspired play for years to come.

Well...to update as many know...Carr at CB, Orton at QB, Vickers at FB, the no name Guard and Pool at FS.

Other than the guard, Dallas has improved every position.

The only loss so far this offseason was Robinson and I think that if Austin is healthy for the 6 games he missed, that production goes to Miles.

Bennett is not a loss at all if Phillips stays healthy.

They can stop right now in Free Agency and focus on the draft.

If I am Dallas....I take the best Corner, Guard or Inside Backer that is on the board.

Dallas should add Plaxico Burress!!!! He would be a far better choice then Ogletree. Hey the experiment failed and it's time to cut ties with what amounts to nothing more than an great PRACTICE player and a below average game player.

agree! this team is a mess. as a 35+ year cowboy fan, i can't remember a time when i've been more frustrated with the entire organization. patching a few problems in the secondary will not make much difference with all the other problems. it's sad really...... to see what this team has been reduced to. but yes i'll keep watching them.... and pulling for them, knowing they've been reduced to one of the NFL's "average" bunch, and as quoted above "we can expect more of the same uninspired play for years to come."

They really mired at .500 ball it seems. And I fear that Romo will be past his prime (yes I am a fan of his) before a team can be built around him. Dez Bryant is becoming a disappointment (won't work at his craft), Witten is getting a bit old, Ware is one injury away from turning an average defense into a poor defense. Oddly, they always seem to be one or two plays/players away from greatness but just can't seem to get there. I remember watching them with my baby boy on my lap winning super-bowls.....this September he will go to College and still wonders why I'm a Cowboy fan!? Jerry has lost a whole generation of fans with his mediocrity. Nice work JJ--longest tenured losing GM in the NFL.....job security is nice.

JJ must figure if he keeps the team in the .500 vicinity he'll get enough butts in the seats to pay his loans. All the other events at the Stadium are just biscuits and gravy for JJ.

That salary cap penalty just destroyed your off season...You will be alright if you can win division games.

The Cowboys will win their share of division games but will struggle to make the playoffs unless they get a better effort from their defense this season.

JJ has no problems making money but is useless in fielding a winning team.

They were only able to beat Washington last year and they look like they will be much improved, so from a division standpoint I don't figure that will get any better next season.

I would not use the term "mess".

8-8 is not the end of the world...it just is for Cowboy fans because we expect titles every season.

Realistically, Dallas had to "eat" a lot of dead money last season from cutting Davis, Columbo, Gurode, Williams, etc.

Who knows? Maybe Dallas wins 10 games last season with Asomugha instead of Newman?

What I do know is that Dallas NEVER gets outbid for its man and in this case, they did because of cap issues.

I think Garrett has the team headed in the right direction.

They directly addressed every issue this team had heading into the offseason.

Say what you will, but Pool is an upgrade over Elam. Carr is a big upgrade over Newman, Orton is a jump over Kitna and Vickers only lead blocked for a tandem of backs who had over 2,000yds the last 2 seasons. All upgrades.

The Guards we brought in remain to be seen but comparing them to Dockery and Holland they are...and trust me, Kosier has been hurt each of the last 3 seasons, so Dallas did what it had to do...they signed efficient guys who will create competition.

If we can have another solid draft just as last season, I think Dallas can get to 10 wins.

Granted, we finished 8-8...but man ohh man we were sickeningly close to a 11 win season and a better defense will get us those extra wins.

On the positive side of things hopefully a full season of OTA's and then a regular training camp will benefit the defense. Subtracting Newman and Marty B are also positives.

You are correct...lets also remember one thing...

Ryan took us from 23rd in yards to 14th. And from 31st in scoring to 16th.

Our pass D was 23rd, which, I think if we can get to around 10th in yards and be in the Top 15 on the other 2, Dallas could win 2 or 3 more games vs last season.

Two or three more wins might get them into the playoffs but they'll probably not be good enough make the Super Bowl.

Based on the news released yesterday by the league we'll find out pretty quickly (game 1) if this is the same mess of a pass defense.
