Ravens fans will shed no tears for Hines Ward

"Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward has tearfully announced his retirement after he was released by the team, proclaiming that he will be a "Steeler for life" -- as if that's some kind of badge of honor.

I'm sure there are a lot of Steeler fans who will be a little misty at the thought of him not being around to deliver a key cheap shot and get a retaliation flag thrown on an opposing player. He turned that into an art, but a cheap shot is still a cheap shot. I doubt a lot of fans outside the Steel City are drying their eyes right now.

OK, now that I'm done cheap shotting him on his way out of the NFL, I've got to say something nice about Ward. He was a great receiver and -- like Brett Favre -- he always played with a smile on his face. And, unlike Brett, he apparently knew when it was the right moment to hang up his cleats.

No doubt, there is some more reality TV in his future."

It will just KILL Ravens fans when Ward gets inducted into the HOF.......

Their are at least eight WR's waiting to get into the Hall of Fame before Ward...maybe in ten years or so.

Wow...so much hate to be put upon one person.

I wonder, does the writer of that article know Ward personally or are they basing the article strictly on his football career.

Are you capable of being happy about anything outside of Bears football?

All the time...but I do not believe in pie in the sky, and sugar coating things...

Heinz Ward was a very good player, and one day might make the HOF...but there are 8 to 10 WR's who deserve it more, and until they get in...he will have to wait.

Is sarcasm all you post?

BG...the HOF doesn't work that way...just because you're already in line means you get in before a player that qualifies after you....even without considering Wards unique skill set, just by yardage and passes caught, every other receiver with his stats are already in......plus he's a SB MVP on top of everything else...

March 21, 2012  12:17 PM ET

oooops!.....just because you're already in line DOESN'T mean you get in before a player that qualifies after you

Not at all. My question to you wasn't meant sarcastically at all. It was simply a question.

hall of fame ? = definately steeler's H.O.F.,.......Canton ?= depends how many H.O.F. voters he pissed-off [if any?].

But of those 8 to 10 WR's that had qualified for the HOF, almost all of them have much better stats than Ward...and deserve entrance already...some will already be enshrined by the time he qualifies in five years...to me, it is borderline close.

Check your facts, BG..... none of the receivers your talking about have anywhere near the career Hines had... none are SB MVPs, none are anywhere near the complete player that he was... all the receivers with comparable stats to Ward are already in Canton

Not in this order:

Tim Brown
Andre Reed
Cris Carter
Terrell Owens
Randy Moss
Harold Carmichael
Marvin Harrison

These were all #1 WR's for their franchise...Ward was not...he was always the complimentary player. Each will be considered on his own.

Ironman, there are at least five on this list alone, most likely all of them. But he will be judged, and maybe one day he will make it...it will not be on the first ballot.
