NFL  > San Francisco 49ers  > Free Agency is about over, time to think DRAFT
March 23, 2012, 12:29 PM
I am going to say for certain that the 49ers this year will not draft a QB and that their 1st round draft choice will come from one of 3 schools 1) Stanford.... 2) Wisconsin.... 4) Georgia Tech.

I'm wondering if there is someone in this years draft that appeals to the 49ers so much that they are willing to trade up in the 1st round in order to get him. The only person I could see them trading up for is David DeCastro G / Stanford. The 6 positions they need help at G, C, WR, DE, RB, CB.- right now the most urgent position to fill is RG.

The Green Bay Packers signed FA center Jeff Saturday to a two year deal today. Terms were not disclosed.

OG Zeitler of Wisconsin could be of interest to the Niners. His value has skyrocketed since the NFL combine and he could also play center.

Wow I thought he was supposed to follow Peyton to Denver?

I think SF has their eye on 2 Wisconsin linemen. Offensive Guard Zeitler, and Center Kunz .

Either one would be a good signing.

That was a good signing but Green Bay will still have to draft a young center to replace him in a couple years. I'm surprised they didn't go after any defensive FA's as their defense ranked dead last in the NFL last season. Unless they upgrade that unit the Packers will struggle to win their division this year.

The 49ers last year at this time only had one QB on the roster, David Carr. Now they have 4 ...Alex Smith- 6'4"/220, Colin Kaepernick- 6'5"/ 235, Scott Tolzien- 6'3"/ 205, Josh Johnson- 6'3"/ 205. That will make the QB competition a lot more interesting in the off season. The competition between these 4 should be fun to watch. One thing these 4 are starting to develop is cockiness, when there was talk about Manning coming to the 49ers they all ( even Smith ) said ; That's great as long as we get to compete for the starting job, makes you wonder why Manning never showed up for the competition? Both Kaepernick and Johnson are athletic specimens as good if not more athletic than Cam Newton or RG3.
