NFL  > Arizona Cardinals  > Cardinals lose Super-bowl on Bogus Call from officials!
February 1, 2009, 11:40 PM
First thing I want to state is that I'm not a Cardinals fan or a Steelers fan but after watching the super-bowl and seeing the Cardinals robbed of the super-bowl championship because of a bogus call from the officials really makes me sick.

I tapped the game, was in a room with over 20 people, many of them who were Steelers fans and even though their team won they stated that you could clearly see that the receiver for the steelers did have control of the ball but, his right foot never touched the ground, by like 3 to 4 inches.

He caught the ball, the toe of his left foot clearly touched the ground and after review of the replay multiple times you could clearly see that his right foot was about 3 to 4 inches above the ground and never touched the ground as he fell into the end zone.

Now we are all watching this unfold live on TV, the announcers stated, THERE IS CLEARLY NOTHING THAT WE CAN SE THAT WOULD SHOW THAT BOTH FEET DIDN'T TOUCH THE GROUND.

Well myself and a room full of others and, I heard talk radio on the way home, stating the same thing that it looked like his right foot never touched the ground. It wasn't like his right foot was even close to the ground where you could say yah, i guess it was touching, that's to close to call i would agree it was a touch down.

All in all I think who ever these officials are first they shouldn't be making calls when you can clearly that his right foot was 3 to 4 inches above the ground and I would highly suggest that these people get their eyes checked before next season rolls around.

I think it's really a huge let down for all the fans and let alone the players of the Cardinals that work hard all year to get to the super-bowl and lose it all in the last 30 seconds of the game because of a bogus call by some blind official.

steelers win and people complain about officiating.

nothing new....

February 2, 2009  12:07 AM ET

Yah your right, no one likes to hear the truth well, here is a link below to sports Illustrated web site that has a big photo right on the home page and you can clearly see his right foot isn't touching the ground. I saw it in the replay and now here is a photo right on a web site where you can see for your self.

Not complaining, just stating the truth. And like I stated in my prior post I'm not a Steelers or a Cardinals fan. For the Record I'm a Colts fan. I watched the super-bowl because I'm a sports fan and i like football. I could care less which team won the super-bowl tonight, may the best team win. Well from what i see the best team got screwed because of a bogus call by some officials. I understand it happens all the time in sports but it doesn't make it right and to state I'm complaining because the Steelers won is stupid because they really didn't win, they had the game handed to them in the last 30 seconds on a bogus call, their lucky that's all...

blah blah blah...get over it..we are the champs...the best team EVER!!! SIXBURGH...GO STEELERS!!!

February 2, 2009  12:30 AM ET

Whatever, this is like talking to a tree stump, enjoy your mulligan, it's like the Steelers got a boggy tonight but the officials called it a birdy...

Nothing to be proud off... Just feel lucky that the officials turned a blind eye...

I find it interesting that nobody is talking about the Fitzgerald catch in the end zone. He clearly did not have control of the ball, on the way to the ground, and the nose of the ball touched the turf. I believe Referees in every NFL game are pretty consistent, but they are human. Humans make mistakes. In retrospect, I believe, they all even out in the end. GOOD GAME!! GO STEELERS!!!!

February 2, 2009  10:13 AM ET

Seriously colts1.........what picture are you looking at?? I looked at that picture and it CLEARLY shows that both feet were touching. It may have been toes brushing the grass, but they are touching. Sorry you are so bitter about Peyton not making it to the big game, but a great game is a great game, and all your crying is not going to take away from that!

February 2, 2009  10:29 AM ET

I believe the officials should have reviewed the last play and inside two minutes to play the rule book says that the booth is supposed to be REQUIRED to review any controversial call that could have an impact on the final score and I believe that was a controversial call and that the officials should have reviewed that play and I believe that it was an incomplete pass and his arm was going forward.

February 2, 2009  11:16 AM ET

There were a few, the 1 that springs to mind was the Rushing the Passer call, which Madden & Michaels called a bad 1 at the time. With Rothleshberger always keeping the play alive you always have to try and get him and i cant remember who it was but he hit the QB something like 1.5 secs after he released the ball and kept a Steelers drive going. Also the fact that the Cards had to challenge twice and won both (obviouslly official errors)

Ye i supose there were a couple of dodgy calls, But apart from that i think the officials had a decent game, and wouldnt put the loss to bad officiating, But BIG BEN putting that last drive together. (Plus think that the Cards went ahead to earlly)

February 2, 2009  11:21 AM ET

Worst officiated game in SB history .... how did the officials miss all of the ~10 holding fouls on the int return for touchdown?

February 2, 2009  11:28 AM ET

Yeah they were robbed ..
The better team and the best organization in football won that game .

February 2, 2009  11:35 AM ET

All NFL games have calls which the human eye and sometimes a camera shot cannot make a 110% correct call. Cards D chocked and 100+ on penatiles lost them the game.

Fantastic Super Bowl otherwise!

As great as the play that Harrison made was, he's gotta be tackled or at least knocked out of bounds. That play changed the game. Arizona's secondary should not have let Pittsburgh parade down the field on that last drive. Props to Big Ben and Holmes for making it happen.
Fitzgerald should have taken a knee at the 1yd line.

February 2, 2009  12:00 PM ET

I said before the game Arizona had to win big or they win at all. A close game and the calls will go the Stealers way. We saw it in Super Bowl XL. The refs had to be a little more fair this time but still the Steeler recieved favorable calls.
Why didn't Holmes get called for excessive celebrations? Using the football as a prop to celebrate is a penalty that has been called all season but not here against the beloved Stealers. Why didn't Warner last throw get reviewed? In such a critical situation its suppose to get looked at, of course it didn't.
Stealers get 2 rings in the last 4 years but both times they were outplayed. It sickening.

You whiners that think you know more than the officials looking at plays from multiple angles in extreme frame by frame slow motion before making their final decisions need to go out and buy a copy of "Football for Dummies". There were close officiating calls that went against the Steelers during the game too, but the Steelers adapted and overcame. If you want to blame someone for the Steelers Sixth Superbowl Win. Then blame the knuckle-head on the Cardinals sideline that wasn't standing back and ended up blocking his own defender from tackling Harrison at the 10 yard line to stop what ended up being an Epic 100 Yard Superbowl touchdown. Or what about the 3 Cardinal Personal Fouls they committed in a single drive that ended up giving the Steelers huge yardage gains and not one but TWO tries to get across the goal line? Or how about the Cardinal defender that mis-timed his jump that could have easily blocked Holmes game winning catch?

The bottom line is that the game is 60 minutes long. The Cardinals fought well, played much better than expected defense stopping the Steelers at the goal line multiple times, and even managed to take back the lead. But in the end, the Steelers came out on top because they made the critical plays that they needed to when they really counted.

well put, it was Arizona's game to take and they didn't. The mistakes they made was
the difference.

February 2, 2009  12:35 PM ET

The Fitzgerald lob pass was not a touchdown; didn't have control of the ball when he hit the ground, Moss touchdown may not have been a touchdown so those two cancel each other out. But what about the rest of the officiating throughout the game. Its was completly horrible. The 3 personal fouls on the Cards in one drive. How can they call a facemask penalty on the defense when its o.k for the running back to stiff arm and grab the facemask of the defender, that rule needs to change. Overall it was a great game to watch as a fan. I vote to get rid of the instant replay b/c it causes more contraversies now that it did without it

February 2, 2009  12:52 PM ET

I concur with Mean Joe (60 mins of football) usually winners are the ones with least mistakes and in a close game such as that one the team who scores last will win the game. Cards played thier hearts out but fell short. They should hold thier heads high!

Again most oustanding football game!

OK, I am not a fan of any particular team, I am just a fan of football in general. I don't have stickers on my car or own a football jersey or even a shirt with a team logo. The only "football" related thing in my house is the NFL Channel. I personally just like watching the games and playing Fantasy Football. Now, let me say this, I was not really looking forward to this Superbowl this year, not so much because the Cardinals were in it, they played some awesome football this year, what I am not a big fan of are teams that play dirty. Over the years I have watched the Steelers play dirty more times then I care to count. I watched when they blew out Carson Palmers knee for fear of losing to the Bengals, I watched when a Steeler flew hear first into a Baltimore Raven and left him out cold on the turf and he had to be carted away for fear of losing the the Ravens, and last night I watch #92 punch an Arizona Cardinal in the back and push him down with his arm and elbow, keeping him from getting up and when he did finally get up, #92 proceeded to push him over onto the ground again and then celebrated. Huh? That guy should have been ejected, no questions asked. But a flag was not even thrown. Are Steeler fans that die hard that they can overlook how dirty some of the players are? Even Hines Ward, which disappoints me beyond words. I use to have great respect for him. I agree the officiating was the worst I have seen in a long time and I think that game should be reviewed with a fine tooth comb. Unfortunately, it was a sickening ending to a pretty awesome football season in general. I hope I never have to see those types of dirty plays again, but I guess the coach and the fans believe that it is OK to do whatever it takes to win. So, enjoy the dirty win Steeler Nation. But watch out next season, because other teams are watching your dirty plays and just may turn the tables on you. Maybe a Raven or a Bengal will blow out Big Ben's knee to win the game, who knows? Just remember, what goes around comes around.
