Interesting topic. I only hope it doesn't lead to some racially motivated posts. You can't ever tell around this place.
It's been a scam ever since it went into effect. There are always those *wink wink* deals that everyone knows about. The spirit of the rule has never truly been complied with.
it is a scam, its only use to to shutup the folks that play the race card everytime they do not get what they want. I'm sorry but its 2012 last I checked and in 99% of the time these days, that card does not apply. Next rule will be that if you have a white starting QB his backup must be black, and you must have one white WR per every 3 black ones. LOL
I just think its funny the lengths some people go so that they do not have to take responsibility for theirselves

Whether you agree with the Rooney rule is one issue, but another issue is this:
Maybe I am wrong, but I know of no other industry where an employer is told who must be interviewed for a job in the company. NFL owners spend hundreds of millions of dollars to buy their teams (or perhaps billions in the future after the Dodgers sale), and then are told by the league who they have to interview? Not sure this would hold up in court. Sure, fire and police departments do this all the time, but there public funds are being spent, which is not the case with NFL teams.
why would the ''rooney-rule'' come-in to play here?,......i've seen head-coach's ''hand-picking'' their successors when they retire.,.......then, how'bout a rooney-rule for more white-players on the field ?,...... [nothin-racial,....just making a point !]

Actually you are incorrect regarding public funds being spent. Most new stadiums do get a nice chunk of taxpayer money to help pay for a lot of the stadium costs. At least Artlington, Texas was smart enough to cap the amount and any cost overruns would come of of JJ's pockets and there were sizable cost overruns on that project.
I knew someone was going to mention the stadium monies, and it didn't take you long!!!
While I agree with you there, I think, but am not certain, that in some of these cases, the teams do not own the stadium--they lease it from the state or county. This is quite a different situation where a public entity coughs up money to the team to build a stadium and the team takes ownership of the stadium. Even in the latter case, the public monies could be construed as a business deal to simply keep the team in a given location--cost of doing business for the government. Governments give public monies or tax breaks to private companies all the time, but in general, the government does not attempt to control the private corporations, although I will give you that sometimes part of the deal is that local workers be employed for a project.

But your original premise--that the NFL dictates who teams must interview--is flawed. Teams can interview whomever they choose, provided that they comply with NFL rules.
I agree with the premise of your answer...that the best man should be hired...and do not even think that there should be a ratio, based on race...BUT with 65% of all rosters being African American, I would hope the the racial compositions of Front Office and Owners would include more minorities, and should not have to be legislated to any level, just to create a perception of inclusion.
I do think the Rooney rule is outdated...football is one area now where race does not matter as much as it does in some other portions of society...the Players, Owners and Front Office only see one color now...and that is green.
Yes I do believe it is dated and racism works both way's. There is no way to tactfully approach this subject without someone reading it the wrong way so I'll simply say it is outdated IMO and leave it at that.

It may be outdated in our opinion but there are still many that believe minorities are discriminated against when it comes to hiring HC's or GM's. Just take a look at the controversy in Florida over the "stand your ground law" which is being used by some as an example of racism.

As so far as head coaches and GM's are concerned what about the players? and who is exactly the minority anymore. To me I take the definition "The smaller number or part, esp. a number that is less than half the whole number" some however weave race into this equation. If they want to actually try and get ugly with this what is the ratio of the NFL player wise, should that ratio be rationalized as the Rooney rule does for head coaches and GM's or is/was it meant only for those positions of power? If it is aimed and the higher positions what is this ultimately telling all of us, it's a battle of power and not simply a means to make thing equal.
I hope our children or their children can see things on an equal level better than our generations and those before ours has. IMO the rule itself separates and forces/fuels the beast so to speak, for if the NFL as a whole cannot see past a persons skin color and look only at the them for their accomplishments/bode of work then we have not made a bit of progress as a civilization in the last few years and that is disheartening.

Black people make up 13% of the population, and 65% of players in the NBA...I believe that they are represented fairly at every level, except ownership...and since you can not legislate who has the money to buy a team...I see nothing except trying to justify the perception that they want.
As far as the stand your ground defense in the Florida case, it is a joke...I can not wait until his trial, and I hope the prosecution seeks the death penalty.
