NFL  > General NFL  > The Manning Essay : On Denver and Indy
April 11, 2012, 02:13 AM
When news broke of Manning???s decision to come to Denver, my first thought was:

RT @ncshvdavid Peyton just made sure he will end his career with less rings than his brother.

I???ll take any amount of money you want to throwdown, that Peyton will not win a title in Denver.

Look, Manning is a first ballot HOF, and one of the best QB???s in my lifetime (top 5) but still, he doesn???t have a stellar W/L record, and he has ONE playoff game-winning drive.

That being said. Do I want Manning as my QB?

No. I???ve got Cam Newton, the wife???s team has some dude named Brees. In 3 years, I think we both will be glad we don???t have Manning.

By my count, there are 16 teams that don???t need Manning (NE,Pit,Hou,Ind,Cin,NYG,WAS,
PHI,CAR,NO,Atl,Chi,Det,GB,StL,SD) that???s half the league, and sorry, fans of Balt, SF and Dallas- you all could use Manning more than you know. These teams are set (or hope to be set) at QB for the next 3 years.Just for fun, here are teams that are too far away that Manning is not going to help for 3 years.Jax, Minny, Cle, Ten, Sea, Buf and Oakland. These 7 teams are not a top 6 Superbowl contender with Manning.

Manning is OLD, and he???s been dinged in the neck- QBs do need to turn their heads from time to time in the NFL, the ONLY reason to sign Manning is to make title runs for the next 3-5 years. He???s not going to help the next generation, he???s not going to coach your team, he???s not going to throw down serious roots.

Manning knows this, and I???m sure the thought process was- Tebow got them that far with a 47% completion rate- I have to be able to win 2 more games than that for a ring!

Sounds plausible, but patently false.

Let???s look at the AFC west, who is there that is poised to make the Broncos go 4-2 instead of a six game cushion while the Ravens/Steelers, Pats/Jets are fighting for a weekly bye? No one.
But how many times has Manning only needed to win twice to win the AFC? This isn???t new to Manning- wax a weak division, win 10+ games, get a week off, go 0-1 or 1-1 in the playoffs, rinse, repeat.
Does going from a weak division to the weakest in football change this? Denver has to hope so.

His brother has come through a much tougher conference to win his rings, and neither time had a bye, with all of his games on the road, gaining something called ???momentum???, I wonder if setting the cruise control at week 13 has cost the Colts almost as much as Bob Sanders injuries in the playoffs?

Manning signed for a good chunk of the Salary Cap. The reason WHY they have so much under the cap, is because they are YOUNG and mostly under rookie deals, when those guys come due, that 20M deal is going to cost them some players- look at the Saints this offseason.

Next, let???s see the AFC powers, and how they will be in 3 years.

New England- still powerful, will still be good as long as Brady and Bill are upright.

Pitt ??? Regardless of the Wallace situation, I???ll put good money down that the next 3-5 years, Steeler nation will be watching playoff games at home more often than not.

Balt ??? Getting old, and like I said above, they could have used Manning. If Flacco doesn???t become a top 6 QB, they are going to become Minnesota very quickly.

Hou ??? Again, depends on the QB, but I like Houstons chances for the short term.

SD ??? if you took the Steelers??? Brain Trust and put them here, do you think they are a power? If you did that 5 years ago, you thin Rivers might have as many rings as Manning?

So we can say for the next three years, we know at least 2 of these teams are going to be REALLY good, and 2 more can be lightning in a bottle, and one is a better brain from possibly entering this class- and who knows if Cincy has the real deal (speaking of brain trust) or the Jets being good. If Miami finds a QB, they could be there as well.

The NFL is unlike the NBA, where a solid core can add a player and win a title, its closer to MLB, where if you add a top player and turn your weakest position into a strength, the title can be yours (depending on who you meet).

The main issue I have with Manning is, had he joined the Niners, there is no question he would have made them a top 3 caliber team. Even without Alex Smith under contract, Vegas oddsmakers made the Niners the second-best bet in the NFC, Denver isn???t even close to being a favorite to winning the title.

Let me give you an NBA example- Steve Nash is a free agent after this season, if he wants a ring, where should he go? If he were Manning, he???d goto the Grizzlies. Young, over achieved in the playoffs last year, same conference but different division in a larger mid-sized market. Is he going to do better than round 2 with that team?

Nope, same as Peyton.

Manning didn???t have to backup Brady or Rodgers or be the OC at New Orleans, but add a 85% 2010 Manning to the Cowboys, Niners, Texans or Ravens and that team is getting odds better than the Packers to wave the Lombardi at the Superdome.

This year? Romo could come out 'smokin!'.

We'll see! He became a father yesterday. I heard the doctor handed off the kid to Romo and he dropped it. Not a good sign.

WOW...just WOW. I mean a Panthers fan that would rather have Newton over Manning. Aside fromn the fact that PM's near the end of his career and CN's just getting started. I mean picking CN over PM is really going out on a limb(ha-ha). I'm a smarta**.

the only teams that dont need peyton are no, ne, and maybe nyg/gb

Most teams don't need Peyton Manning in his current physical condition. The Broncos are gambling that he stays healthy this season. If he doesn't Elway will be run out of town.
