OH, HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!

Mike Piazza was the best hitting catcher.

April 23, 2012  07:03 AM ET

Need to define question better. Piazza was a great hitting catcher but was an awful fielding catcher. Bench is still the benchmark for hitting and fielding combined. Berra, Campanella etc..
Second tier: Simmons, E. Howard.
There is another level of great fielding catchers not known for their hitting. Sunberg, Grote.

How many times each mentioned catcher batted 300 or above? How many times each mentioned catcher received a gold glove? How has the best combination of both?

Bench/Berra, either can be argued, but both are hands down the top 2 catchers of all time.

April 24, 2012  04:46 PM ET

Berra Career numbers (18 yrs): .285/358 HRs/1430 RBIs/48.62 Caught Stealing Percentage
Bench Career Numbers (17 yrs): .267/389 HRs/1376 RBIs/ 43.47 Caught Stealing Percentage
Campenella Career Numbers (10 yrs): .276/242 HRs/856 RBIs/ 57.40 Caught Stealing Percentage
Mike Piazza Career Numbers (16 yrs): .308/427 HRs/1335 RBIs/34.44 Caught Stealing Percentage
Pudge Career Numbers (21 yrs): .296/311 HRs/1332 RBIs/ 45.68 Caught Stealing Percentage

Average each player, Average + HRs + RBIs + CSP divded by seasons = Catcher Value

YB 117.87
JB 122.09
RC 143.14
MP 131.53
IR 94.51

Roy's caught stealing percentage is the highest in major league history. But for his car accident, Roy would have shattered all the records.

He was a good catcher, but best of all-time? What about the ones that came before him like Johnny Bench and the late Gary Carter?

April 25, 2012  09:52 PM ET

He's not even the best pudge of all time...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlton_Fisk

April 26, 2012  11:04 AM ET

No.

May 20, 2012  06:48 AM ET

No way. IMO. Pudge wasn't even better than Mike Sciosia. Piazza was the best!

May 21, 2012  12:46 PM ET

I'd say he probably had the best arm of any catcher, but other catchers were better at calling a game and hitting. There is also the 'possibility' of steroids in his career.

i had to throw my two cents reading some of these quotes. benito santiago had the best arm of all catchers hands down. he threw from his knees and got people out. mike piazza was the best hitting catcher of all time with respects to berra campanella bench and now mauer. but he was only a step better than those just mentioned. his defense and confusion behind the plate take him out of the mix. i think as far as longevity, hitting, handling a pitching staff and defensive ability. for their time. i think pudge makes a really good argument for best of all time

No, Johnny Bench was the best catcher of all time.
