NFL  > General NFL  > NFL Lawsuit .....Safety debate to elevate greatly!
May 4, 2012, 10:36 AM
More than 100 former NFL players on Thursday sued the league claiming ongoing debilitating effects from head injuries, joining a group of some 1,500 retired players who have brought legal action on the same grounds, a plaintiff's attorney said.
The latest lawsuit on behalf of over 100 plaintiffs was filed in federal court in Atlanta, said lawyer Kirk Pope. It seeks an unspecified amount of damages for lost wages, pain and suffering, and medical treatment. - SBnation

With the recent loss of another NFL player to suicide, the question again is being asked, is brain injury/concussion responsible for these deaths? Scientist have been studying the brains of athletes for a while, but now the focus is shifting to the affects of brain injury as a result of the trauma of playing an impact sport. I think you will soon find out some very astounding facts about brain injury as related to the NFL.

Football is not a sport for the weak obviously, but constant impact, especially during the middle and highschool years, where a boys body and brain are still developing has to be looked at closely. Would or should parents be highly concerned when their sons walk out onto the field that they might not walk off the field with the same brain? -Just Dawn

Which makes the T&R thread today on Colt McCoy interesting. What problem did his father have with how Colt's concussion was handled last season?

Agreed TX...this thing is gonna heat up big time, especially since the old school players got the shaft so bad by the league over the years!

I really LOVE football.... The head gear needs to improve for sure. This is a game you could die in, just like a race car driver. The risks are clear!

Depending on how far back the players played there just was not much information on head injuries like there is today. The earliest I recall this issue being discussed goes back to when Steve Young and Troy Aikman were playing. Since their playing days a lot more is known now, especially when it comes to cumulative concussions. The league does need to step up big time when it comes to health care for the players that did play in the earlier era's when players were told to suck it up and get back on the field.

Colt got blind-sided by james Harrison.
Supposedly, the doctors on the sideline never tended to Colt.
A trainer asked him if he was ok and he said yes, so they sent him back in to the game.
After the game, Colt said he had no recollection of any of this.

I think of football much like I think of skiing or riding a motorcycle.
Only a matter of time until a serious injury occurs.

i fell-out of a pickup truck [drunk] once, and landed on my head as we turned onto a side-street,.........now i decided to get into the back of the truck with other party-goers, .....i had a few cocktails like the others, ......and after i fell-out, the others threw me back-into the truck-bed,.......point = i made a decision to hang-out in the back of a [driving] vehicle/fell-out on my own/and might have suffered a concussion......or will i suffer from the after-effects later on ?........i made the choice....now who can i sue today ??

And really, I'm not sure how they didn't know he wasn't ready to go back in. His eyes were vacant.

I had to think about this a bit. I supposed it would depend on the type of equipment being used. If the school/program is using equipment from years ago, forget it.

The NFL has no interest in player safety, just the perception that they do...If they did, they would mandate knee, hip, and thigh pads, as they do shoulder pads. They would would use the NASCAR technology of SAFER walls, and incorporate them into helmets.

This is about the NFL portraying the right perception that the NFL is doing all it can for player safety, so that it will be able to withstand a court challenge
