NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Selection Committee? That's Us!

We all have our opinions about how the 4 playoff teams should be decided. There's your conference champ guys on one end and the BCS top 4 guys on the other with a whole slew of others in between who come up with algorithms that we think will work with the least controversy but inevitably a year will come around in which the algorithm picks the wrong teams.

But if we already know who the right teams are, why do we need an algorithm? It has occurred to me that a Selection Committee has its merits.

So I want to try this experiment. We are the Selection Committee and we each get a vote. Weigh in with your 4 teams from this past season. Don't bother seeding, we'll let the BCS poll do that. I'll compile the votes periodically to see how we are doing.

Or was it ...

Temple
Idaho

... and therein lies the problem. We don't really know. Since there are so few inter-conference games we have to make judgment calls ... and all we have is opinions on the matter. Like it or not our opinions are heavily influenced by the polls and human bias.

So here's my 4 best teams from last season:
LSU, 'Bama, OkState and Stanford.
What a shocker.

Sorry Oregon ... you beat Stanford but LSU beat you and ... and ... you were tied with Stanford in my final opinion but ... but ... my human bias kept you out of the mix LOL!

LSU
Bama
Arky
Georgia

The best four HAVE to be from the SEC. No way around it. :p

I'm surprised an East team even got in there. Guessing it was a sympathy vote, DC?

I'd imagine that a selection committee would be most prone to human bias, and simply favor the biggest named schools. Or even possibly select the schools for more reasons than just the quality of the football team, such as say, what teams would draw the largest potential television ratings.

I could see the Selection Committee looking at last year's teams and say "Oklahoma State had a great season but... it's Oklahoma State, so we'll select someone else."

C'mon, Un, lay down your 4

No different than what the polls would have done! The polls did exactly that last year in putting Bama #2...better football perception than Okie Lite, Stanford, Oregon.

OkState lost on the road and 'Bama lost at home.
In the end the polls held OkState to a higher standard than 'Bama.
Plus, some coaches voted like dooshbags in the final USA Today Coach's Poll ...

<cough cough Pinkel>
<cough cough Saban>

C'mon.
Not that simple.
Yeah, Bama lost at home--to the Number 1 team in the country.
Okie State blew a huge lead on the road to a team that didn't even win half their games.

Yes you are right it is not ever that simple ... but the polls try and make it seem that way.

'Bama lost to the #1 team in the country (who looked like the #25 team in the country when they played 8 weeks later).

'Bama beat a Div.I-AA FCS creampuff at home on the same weekend OkState lost to a conference opponent on the road.

OkState went on to beat OU 44-10. 'Bama went on to beat a weak Auburn team 42-14.

Then Saban voted OkState lower than their #3 ranking and Pinkel really put the screws to Gundy!.

So yes my claim that OkState was held to a higher standard than 'Bama ... in the polls ... is accurate IMO because the polls have too much room for bias and manipulation.

I'm not disputing 'Bama's worthiness - they proved in the end to be the #1 team. I'm disputing the validity of the polls and the way they are manipulated.

The bottom line is ... the larger the pool gets, the smaller the chance that the true best team gets left out of the mix but as long as the polls are a factor I'll be skeptical of the mix.

I think I would have given a different 4 prior to the bowls being played (which is really the 4 that matter) than I would give now, knowing the results of said bowls.

Before the bowls being played I'd have probably said:

LSU
Oklahoma State
Alabama
Stanford

But now that the bowls are over I'm inclined to say:

Alabama
LSU
Oklahoma State
Arkansas

But I'm not necessarily satisfied with either list, because Oregon complicates everything.

But didn't Gundy say, at one time in the voting before the last, that Bama was better than Lite? And that is what cost them?

Thought I heard that somewhere....

Yep....

Gundy Would Vote Bama

I believe this cost him $500k bonus?

Yeah, but Okie Lite lost to a 6-6 team. Bama lost to the #1 team in the nation.

I know it's not that simple Joe. But you have to admit, if two teams are even close to the same quality, schools like Bama (and a whole bunch of others, not just picking on Bama) get the "perception" or "beauty" vote over schools like Okie Lite every time from pollsters.
