NFL  > New England Patriots  > really? what a tool!
May 7, 2012, 12:36 PM
Former Patriots assistant coach and former New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini expressed dismay over the ever cloudy shadow that is "spygate."

Mangini, who alerted the NFL in 2007 that the the Patriots were taping opponents while head coach of the Jets, took to ESPN's NFL Live program to convey his disappointment in how the scandal has continued to plague the franchise, particularly after Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh called the Patriots' three Super Bowls tainted.

"It's regret, it's disappointment, it's all of those things," Mangini said. "Because I know what it took to win those Super Bowls and I have so much respect for the people that were involved there. I'm disappointed that this is what it's translated into.

"Never in a million years did I expect it to play out like this," Mangini continued. "This is one of those situations where I didn't want them to do the things they were doing. I didn't think it was any kind of significant advantage, but I wasn't going to give them the convenience of doing it in our stadium, and I wanted to shut it down. But there was no intent to get the league involved. There was no intent to have the landslide that it has become."

If the Patriots Super Bowls are tainted then so is the Saints Super Bowl. Yes there was poor sportsmanship involved in both cases but they should let bygones be bygones.

I refuse to believe that Mangini was that naive about the possible repercussions of snitching on BB and the Patriots.

There was nothing tainted about the Patriots Super Bowls. This whole situation has been greatly exaggerated in my opinion. The people that complain are just jealous.

IMO the perception of that, and the eight game suspension will cost him his job.

I think the owner will want a clean slate.

he thought he was a hot shot. he's certainly not head coaching material and i doubt any head coach wants to watch over his back with a guy like that lurking so i don't see him being hired in any capacity in the NFL.

i believe mangina was with the Enemy-jets when he ''dropped a dime'' on coach/B.B.........maybe rat-boy thought the AFC-East was all his with B.B. bruised-n-shaken ??!......old-newz.

The Patriots' spying reminds me of boxer Antonio Margarito. Margarito bloodied and battered opponents (Citron, Cotto) until Shane Mosley's trainer observed him cheating. Since then, Margarito has been unable to reach the heights he achieved prior to the discovery. There is no empirical evidence that Margarito used the illegal hand wraps to his advantage prior to the Mosley fight. However, his performance since leads to the conclusion that something changed during that time. Obviously, the parallels between New England and Antonio Margarito aren't exact. While the Pats have achieved some success since Mangino's "discovery", they have yet to achieve the ultimate success. That could just be coincidence, if you believe in such things.

That will be remedied this season.

Is it a coincidence that his coaching career when into a rapid decline thereafter?

Not at all. What surprises me to this day is that the Browns hired him after the Jests let him go.

Well, the Browns have built an entire portfolio of curious decisions over the years.
