NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Is Mack Brown now washed up a la Carroll/Myers?
May 18, 2012, 03:57 PM
In hindsight, it has become clear that Pete Carroll and Urban Myers, both fabulous coaches, left their teams in something of a shambles when they left USC and Florida.

Petey had given up on recruiting. Kiffin inherited big holes up front on both sides. Myers let his players run wild, with some of the landing in jail. It took USC two years to rise back to the creme de creme (the norm). And I suspect Flarida will need at least one more, too.

My question:

Is Mack Brown now in the same situation? Has he burned out like Carroll and Myers did. I think this might explain Texas' two vastly mediocre seasons now behind us.

Me thinks Mack, aka UTx football, messed up four and five years ago. In hindsight they either didn't evaluate recruits very well during that period, didn't coach 'em up when they got them, or both. As bad as they were, I have to say both. JMO.

GoFlo, your question has a lot of merit and it could be that Mack Brown's fire isn't burning as hot as it was just five years ago. Maybe getting paid five million bucks per year at sixty years old can make a man complacent.

I think another thing that the situation in Texas is an example of just how extremely difficult it is to maintain a top ten status in college football year in and year out. Like Deep Creek alluded to, every facet of the game, from coaching to recruiting to team chemistry needs to be firing on all cylinders.

Need to know where your allegiances lie. Is the spelling you used a subtle dig at the Gators?

Thank you for not mentioning Phil Fulmer. Fulmer's success was built upon the talents of his staff, most notably, David Cutcliffe and John Chavis. Without Cutcliffe, the Vols lost their offensive punch. When Cutcliffe returned in 2007, Fulmer's tenure was salvaged by a 9-3 regular season, SEC East Championship, a respectable loss to LSU in the SEC CG, and an Outback Bowl win over Wisconsin. In 2008, Cutcliffe departs for Duke, and the Vols fall to 5-7, with Fulmer getting an awkward, highly public exit at the hands of Mike Hamilton (Who failed to obtain the services of his first four targeted coaches and wound up hiring Lane Kiffin.).

Yes. I hung out Tennessee's undies on the line after thanking GoFloSemis for not doing so. It's my privilege. I'm an UTK alumnus.

He's a Noley, but that spelling isn't a dig at the Gators - native Floridians are known to pronounce the name to sound more like Flah-rida, as opposed to the almost-long-o sound of Flo-rida.

I don't think it is a money thing....MB's wife makes more than he does, so he is set whatever happens.

I think both his coaches, and MB's rein on those coaches, faltered badly....and he didn't see it, or didn't WANT to see it, until it was too late. They have have too many top recruiting years for this to be anything other than the coaches both didn't coach em up and the coaches let the players run the show....

Being "washed up" is one thing ... being compared to Carroll and Meyer is just quite another. I'd rather be washed up ...

Don't see Texas beating OU or WVU this year. TCU and KSU will be fairly even games. If MB loses 4 he might be out of a job.

QUOTE(#15):

Kinda depends on just how strong K-State and/or TCU turn out to be. Lot of question marks on both teams; could be real good, could be mediocre. If Mack loses any games to a team who doesn't end the season ranked #15 or above, the drumbeat for his head will start.

Do you think the drumbeat will be louder if he keeps playing multiple QB's during the course of the season? IMHO its hard to see years of waffling look good-that position has seemed grossly out of focus for the Horns since McCoy left, and that was a long time ago in CFB time...

WVU definitely has the schedule in their favor this year.

I think Bama had a decent QB last year.
