MMA  > General MMA  > Who Is the Greatest of All Time?
July 20, 2012, 12:57 PM
We had this recently as a topic on an MMA roundtable featuring Hyped, JimJ, NCshvDavid and myself.

We were all unanimous in saying that Anderson Silva is the greatest of all time.

Now, I have two questions for everyone:

1) Who is your GOAT?

2) If Dan Henderson beats Jon Jones, is he the greatest?

My answer for 2 is yes.

If he beats Jon Jones, his accomplishments will include:

1) Won a UFC tournament in '98, beating two of the top fighters in world at that time.

2) Beat Gilbert Yvel, Babalu and Big Nog in one night to win the Rings King of Kings tournament.

3) Pride Welterweight and Middleweight champion.

4)UFC Light Heayweight Champion, beating who many consider the most dominant champion of his time.

Not to mention wins over Shogun, Bustamante, Misaki, Bisping, Palhares, ect.

Loss to Sheilds
Loss to Anderson
Loss to Rampage

But we all took Anderson:

Loss to Takase
Loss to Chonan
Loss to Azerado

Those are much worse than the losses you listed for Dan.

Recently?

Losing fights in your first third of your career, or in another weight class, isn't as bad as long in YOUR PRIME.

Nobody is undefeated in MMA, just don't happen. In 3-4 years if JJ is still champ, his Hammil"loss" isn't going to affect his case.

Chael Sonnen.

Undefeated and undisputed UFC MW champ.

If Chuck Liddell had listened to Dana and retired after his 2'nd loss to Rampage, he could make a claim to that title.

It doesn't seem like Spider is the type of fighter that will keep fighting when he is done as a fighter.

I don't think so, I'd have a hard time taking someone with less than 25-30 fights as GOAT

I want a decade plus to grade

You have a fair debate. I'm just happy you didn't say Fedor. I like Dan Henderson and can't argue what he has accomplished in MMA. But early defeats in Silva careers shouldn't go against him in his legacy after his current winning streak against top contenders. For Dan to surpass Silva he would have to beat Jones, Shields and Silva to claim Goat. Shields recently embarrassed him while Silva picked him apart in the second round. I have Dan in my top 3 next to Silva and GSP.

You could argue that Takase and Azerado were a weight class below Anderson when they fought.

The question is: What do you describe as Hendo's prime? He was a top 10 fighter in 1998 and has really never been out of the top 10 in some weight class ever since.

If Hendo beats Bones, I'd rank him second behind Anderson all time. If Hendo beats Bones, and then goes down and beats Anderson for the MW title, then he will be the greatest of all time.

You must be a Bama fan if a 1-1 Head to head record means you win

Anderson Silva.

Not even close and no argument other than Fedor is acceptable. You can say Dan could be there in the #3 spot if he defeats Jones, but that's about it.

Silva's losses were probably worse, but they were YEARS ago. AND he holds a win heads-up to Dan.

So Silva, Fedor, and potentially Dan depending the outcome of his fight with Jones. And if Zeus would grant me a wish, he'd make Dan land that H-Bomb.
