At the beginning of the year, I would have figured that there was no way the Cards would end up exercising Westbrook's 2013 option. 5 months later though, I think it makes sense. Jake has been solid after a rough stretch in the early part of the year. Given Carpenter's uncertain status, I think this deal for $8.5 next year (really $7.5M, as there was a $1M buyout anyway) is reasonable and gives the rotation some depth.

Now you're looking at a rotation in 2013 of Adam, Garcia, Westbrook, Lynn and then possibly Carp or Shelby Miller, in some mix. I think to go into 2013 with just Adam, Garcia and Lynn and then unknowns in Carp and Miller would have been a mistake.

Someone is going to overpay badly for Lohse, and I think it is clear from Mozeliak's comments that as good as Kyle has been this year, he's really not on the radar.

What does anyone else think about the Westbrook deal? Good/bad or indifferent?

Love the Westbrook deal for 2 primary reasons. First, its cost effective and doesn't handcuff the team from future commitments to Waino (a priority) and eventually Craig and Freese. Second, its short term and won't create a logjam for the arms we'll have coming up in 2014.

I do think that if there is a Carp setback in 2013, the immediate replacement I'd go with would be Kelly not Miller. I'm not sure Miller has completely proven he's advanced beyond 3A competition yet wihile Machine Gun has proven he can get big league outs.

Looking forward to 2014 the potential of a rotation including Waino, Garcia, Lynn, Miller and (if he continues his meteoric rise) Wacha is excitng to say the least.

I hope Lynn's issue is just mental fatigue stemming from his first go around as a pro starter. Don't need another "focus-challenged" starter like Garcia.
