NFL  > New England Patriots  > Week 1 Pats vs Titans

Great win by the Pats, very encouraging. The defense looked so much improved over last season. Jones and Hightower looked fantastic. Granted it was against the Titans but they did a fantastic job at controlling one of the most explosive backs in the game.

The offense looked great per usual but even that was different. Ridley tore it up in the backfield. It would be great to have a dynamic running game to match one of the best passing games in the league. Lloyd looks to be a nice addition to the team. The first pass he missed was horrible but he bounced back and had some nice grabs.

The interesting thing here was the absence of Welker. It did not effect the game much and you have to wonder what that means for his future with the team. Could we possibly be seeing the same thing that happened to Moss a few years ago? I'm doubtful but it will be interesting to see what happens.

Welker won't be a Patriot next season.

Not even then. Too many young guys on the team that can do what he does and Belichick won't forget the contract dispute. Might as well start clearing out his locker 'cause he's done.

He could have held out longer. Mankins held out for half the season and they brought him back. I'm not so sure other guys can do what Welker does. Gronk and Hernandez are dynamic but Welker is a different type of player. I'm not sure what young guys you are talking about. Salas and Edelman seem to be the once replacements. Edelman is good but not as great as Welker. Salas is interesting, had a good rookie season before breaking his leg. But we haven't seen much of him yet.

Okay, maybe just one young guy. Stevan Ridley seemed to get more calls than Welker did and was able to hold onto the ball.

welker's ~phasing~ himself >OUT< [his future here ]if he keeps missing/dropping catches........[m.-op.].

All of a sudden he's the fourth best receiver on the team.

Welker is 31. He still is young enough to put up some stellar offensive seasons but the problem with the Pats signing him is they don't think he is young enough for a long term deal.

It's not that I think he is slowing down but he was only targeted I think 5 times. To me that looks like the Pats are seeing what they can accomplish without him. Just as they did with Randy Moss a few years ago.

many small receivers that take the hits Welker does typically do not have a long shelf life. The Pats are not a team that holds onto players out of the goodness of their heart.

I think one game is a little soon to write off Welker. I think this was a case of BB going with what was working. If he does not produce against Baltimore then I will change my tune.
Speaking of.....I'm really looking forward to that game. Should be a good one. Will be a great measuring stick to where the Pats are. (Sorry, the Titans with a rookie QB don't really impress yet.)

This weeks' opponent for the Pats is certainly not associated with 'impressive'.
