NFL  > San Francisco 49ers  > THE 49ers 3-1 AFTER 4 GAMES. WHAT HAVE THEY DONE, WHERE ARE THEY HEADING ?
October 5, 2012, 04:08 PM
Like last year the Defense of the 49ers is the backbone of this team, Special Teams is also sound but probably not as spotless as last year, Offense is still bonding.

Defense- # 4 defense in the NFL - allowing 16..3 pts per game. they have allowed 277 yds per game #3 , they are +4 in take/giveaways #8, they have only 8 sacks #20.

Offense- Rushing Yards=668 #3 in the NFL, Passing= 784 yards #30, Average 364 yards per game in total offense #19, they score 26 points per game #12.

Special teams the 49ers are in the top 10 in both Kick #3 and Punt #10 return yards.
Akers has missed a few FG's but nothing game changing.
Punter Andy Lee is averaging 46.3 yards, and has 4 within the 10 yard line, longest 61 yds

Alex Smith- 76/ 113= 67%, 784 yards #29, 5 TD's, 1 INT's, Sacked 12 times, QB rating of 98.1.

3rd down conversion is still a big problem for the 49ers with a 33% conversion rate. The worrisome part of this reoccurring factor from last season is that many of the 3rd downs the 49ers fail to convert are short yardage downs. Last week against the NYJ's Smith failed to complete 1 third down pass. they had 3rd and 1 yard from the Jets 2 yard line and failed, but fans will forget it because they scored on 4th down. In the Minnesota game the 49ers had 1st and 10 from the Minnesota 14 yard line to start the second half. The 49ers ran the ball, failed to convert a 1st down and had to settle for a FG. Everyone was excited that the 49er have Randy Moss 6'4" so that Smith could throw to him in the Red Zone, he has only thrown 2X= 1 TD, the only TD by a 49er WR so far this season- that should worry people. There seems to be more people asking; "What's wrong with Randy Moss? Nothing. The only problem with the 49ers is they either don't have plays that are designed for Moss in the Red Zone or Smith just not see him. If Smith cannot pull the trigger in the Red Zone, then it won't be long before people are chanting for Kaepernick.

The Niners are a very balanced team and should win their division. I believe they will go all the way to the Super Bowl.

Ah, they won 3 and lost 1 in a very weak division. They have some good vets, young talent and coach.
They should make the playoffs but because everything changes everyday in the NFL where they are at in 13 weeks is anybody's guess in the first week of October.

Got dammit! Not only is it not a weak division, but they are 3-1 without having played anyone in their division.

Narry, I agree with your take on the offense. 3rd downs piss me off to no end, I can't even watch them. I want to see Kaepernick control the offnese for an entire drive, just to see how the offense reacts. Give him the same playbook as Smith.

The NFC West has the best record against teams out of their division 9-3. Three of the top 4 defenses concerning points allowed in the NFL are in the NFC West. Houston 14.0 ppg, Seattle 14.5 ppg, Arizona 13.6 ppg, San Francisco 16.3 ppg. The NFC West is not the patsy division anymore.

My friend flew from San Jose to Atlanta to see his favorite QB Peyton Manning on Monday Night Football a couple of weeks ago. Because of Mannings terrible 1st quarter he left at half-time . I told him he was crazy for flying that far to see something he can watch on TV, I only go to 49er home games, although me and some of my 49er friends have been talking about going to a game at Seattle or Arizona ( Maybe ), I want to go to St. Louis for the Bar-b-que. It would depend more than anything about what kind of seats we could get.

Gotta get there first. The Eagles should challenge for the East, but not the Conference.
