Congrats Redskins!

RGIII reminds me of a young Randall Cunningham.

And we all know how that played out. I think RGIII is way more talented than Cunningham. imo

All running Q.B.'s careers are usually cut short, they take abuse similar to a running back, RGIII has already experienced one concussion this season. Concussions take their toll on individuals brains and body like a punch drunk boxer.

All QB's are susceptible to concussions whether they run or stay in the pocket and Troy Aikman is evidence of that.

Yes you are right all players are susceptible to concussions even pocket Q.B.'s but scrambling/running Q.B's are more susceptible to concussions. Once they leave the pocket they become R.B.'s and take more of a risk of getting hammered.

This type of hit doesn't happen in the pocket and their is rules in place for protecting Q.B.'s in the pocket.

I also said RG3 reminds me of Cunningham I never said who I thought was better and added the short career with concussions to answer JD's comment "And we all know how that played out."

Running Q.B.'s like Vick, Cunningham, Young, careers are short due to concussions, hit's taken while running. Vick is showing signs of slowing and even reports of his career in question as we type, they are exciting to watch but teams game plan for these type Q.B.'s and sometimes I think anyway inflict more punishment when delivering a blow. In an effort to keep them from scrambling and send a message if you scramble you will pay, not that I condone it just stating an opinion.

There are rules to protect pocket QB's in the pocket but they are broken almost every week as evidenced by the number of fines dished out. would rather take my chances running the ball than be defenseless in the pocket after a pass.

I am going to have to agree with GSH, A Running QB takes a bigger risk for injury. Just look at Peyton Manning and all his consecutive games. Of course, a blind side hit can be devistating!

Evidence? What evidence? This is only an opinion of yours.

trying to track down some stats, but having difficulty getting them as related to injury. Considering running is a much lesser used play by QB's it makes sense that the injuries would be lower. You need a stat that compares the percentage of rushing plays to passing, then you can compare injury stats! or something like that! Like per capita! lol

The simple fact pocket passers have longer careers, there is a difference between a running Q.B. and one who scrambles for a few yards once in awhile to keep a play alive. Blanda played 26 years but 3 of those years never threw a pass, Marino, Favre, Manning all had long careers compared to the norm and were pocket passers.

Q: Who did you pattern your game after?
RG3: RG3: "Randall Cunningham, Steve Young. Guys that people think I've never seen play, like Kenny Stabler. [laughs] Guys that extend the play. John Elway is another guy that extends the play. They win from within the pocket but they also know how to win outside the pocket. I think that's what the game has kind of turned into with guys like Drew Brees, who can run a little bit, and Aaron Rodgers, who can move around a little bit."

I have to agree with RG3 with the exception right now he's a running Q.B. but has the arm to be a pocket passer who scrambles once in awhile like Brees and Rodgers. I call that pocket presence that Brees, Brady, Manning and Rodgers has, they feel the rush and simply slide around the pocket or step up to avoid the rush and occasionally scramble for a few yards in an effort to keep a play alive.

Running Q.B.'s look to run at any given time, pocket passers sometimes takes the sack before running as they know they could take that big hit from a L.B.'er or Safety.

I agree with Aikman but young was known as a running or scrambling Q.B.

A nice article at ESPN magazine at link below, Coaches and talk about some of the topics of running Q.B.'s vs pocket passers. It all comes down to ones definition of the difference between the two as well.
