NFL  > General NFL  > Let's talk "Lazy" football
October 16, 2012, 11:55 PM
Thought this topic is very topical considering this weeks MNF game.

Credit Steve Young for bringing this up. He referred to the Chargers performance in the second half as "Lazy Football".

I thought this really described what we saw Monday.

We've seen this before, plenty if you watch games every week. After watching the Steelers in Oak. & Tenn. this season lose games they seemed to have under total control at halftime. Atlanta dominated Denver and then the Bronco's almost made a complete comeback in the second half. Just a couple examples.

You'd think by now no one would ever play lazy against either Manning brothers yet they do, and often pay the price.

Young went on to say players need to have a "over my dead body" attitude to finish games.

This has been happening so much I wonder just what the coaching staffs around the country can do once their team breaks out to a big lead. Seems once a team starts playing 'soft' or 'lazy' they cannot turn that intensity back on again.

Thoughts?

Might as well group the Cowboys in with this as well.

Gotta give manning and Stokely some credit...Stokely made some amazing catches when it counted.

Could it all be coming back to the lighter training camps that was bargained in by the NFLPA, just throwing it out there, I had a thread on here about teams taking on their coaches personalities.

I also hate seeing teams left off the gas so to speak or as I say "play not to lose" as the Bears did last season against the Tebow led Broncos. I know teams are supposed to be sporting and lay off a big lead late in a game or they get accused of running up the score.

Could be a combination of a team getting lazy with a big lead and their opponent stepping up from a sluggish half and changing their game plan entirely. Hard to really answer seeing all these games swing as they have except players do have to play with an "over my dead body" attitude for a full game and coaches have to be able to adjust on the fly when their game plan goes south. You hear coaches say all the time "we had a game plan" it wasn't executed, to me this is the coach saying I failed to change or adapt in game and the original plan wasn't working and players weren't doing their jobs.

Jeez, you're exactly right. No explanation for what happened Monday night other than complete team-wide meltdown. It's like "we've got the lead," "so I can let down now. Someone else will make that tackle, that play, that catch." Chargers have pretty much owned Peyton Manning over the last decade. Probably the only team that can say that. Until now. Now HE owns them. Notice was served. He's mentally tougher, smarter, and more determined. So many things you can point at. Rivers implosion. Penalties. Turnovers. Missed assignments. Actually, I think the 24-0 score at halftime was Fool's Gold-like. It was not indicative of the way the two teams played. I think the Chargers just got lucky to be up by that much. And it's like they knew they didn't deserve to be in that position.Usually, I point the finger at Norv. But i'm not too critical of him for his play-calling. If anything, he was still throwing the ball too much. Sometimes being more conservative (some callit playing not to lose) is actually good. It was clear that the O line was not protecting in the 2nd half. In retrospect I might have gone to more draws and screens to exploit the overly aggressive D line of Denver. But leaving that statue that is Rivers standing there in the pocket getting pummeled (hey, Rivers, I know you're slow, but feel free to roll out to escape pressure once in a blue moon like you used to do once in a blue moon), was not a great plan. I felt like Norv was trying to say "I'm not being conservative." And Rivers, no excuse. Just horrible play by him. When your team has a big lead, what is THE number one thing you try to avoid? Turning the ball over. And over. And over again. They seserved to lose. They definitely earned it.

That for the Rivers comments, almost spit my coffee all over my monitor.

Agree on the Tebow game.

One has to wonder, if your offense moves the ball successfully for 2 or 3 quarters and you build a lead, WHY change things?

Granted you want to eat the clock but there is no better way to deflate your opponent then to make that mountain harder to climb by scoring more points.

Are you hitting on me girl?
Very flattered yet that would not work out to well at home, the misses wouldn't appreciate that much. (Just like I wouldn't appreciate her doing the same).

Having said that, YES I would love to play Frisbee golf again but it has been a couple decades since the last time, funny it was at Sunset Park. We used to rent horses to ride back in the day close by the park, been quite a while since my last visit to the area. Had a friend way back when that worked for Wayne Newton, know he had a place close by, he used to shovel horse 5*it for him, ha!

Oh yeah...I've lived on the East or Southeast side almost the whole time I've been here. My parents bought a house over by Chaparral when I was a kid. Paradise Park is where we swam before our pool was built. From what I hear, you can still get just about anything you want over there in the mini-ghetto!
