NFL  > General NFL  > Barry Switzer

Barry Switzer when he was the Dallas Cowboys HC told Phil Simms that the option would work in the NFL and to my surprise Phil Simms agree with Switzer. It wasn't the "Bone" option that Barry knew, but from passing formations. The spread, the pistol, and the zone read option to name a few. I always thought that it could work because of the salary cap because option quarterbacks wouldn't be in high demand so they wouldn't take much salary cap space. Option Qbs also wouldn't be durable so you can easily draft another option quarterback. Teams could also sign a lot of players at other positions because of cap space. Blocking schemes wouldn't change much.

Somebody in other thread called the Redskins offense "a Gimmick offense, but it works like the option except RG III is in the shotgun (4 1/2 yards off the LOS). There are other QBs who throw and run who are now playing in the NFL. They are in winning teams, don't turn the ball over, and have great completion percentage.

It's not the option that Barry knew, but it's still an option quarterback that could be the wave of the future in the NFL. I'm in a small minority who believe that Barry Switzer was one heck of a football coach.

Michael Vick and Warrick Dunn used to run the read option in Atlanta, back when the Falcons led the NFL in rushing yards for three straight seasons (2004, 2005 and 2006).

I'm not sure why everyone acts like it's new to the NFL this year.

There are no gimmicks that haven't been used before.

''george seifert'' comes to mind .....everytime i hear switzer's name.

Seifert defended Switer's football acumen. Rightfully so!
