You would think the NFL would pick an amount of feet that would be divisible by 2 and round off to an even amount instead of 17'6" one each side why not make it an even 18'0".
The referees already have a hard time seeing all the penalties that occur on a present day NFL size field, imagine all the holding Baltimore could get away with without a ref seeing them on a larger field?
How many stadiums could accomodate more yards and doesn't the CFL have a wider playing surface than the NFL?

Sour grapes? I suppose the 49ers never hold.

If they go with the extra feet the NFL field will then be the same size as a CFL field.
I can't imagine any city with a stadium being willing to build a new one to accommodate a wider field nor do I imagine any team owners willing to remove seats to make the field wider.

And we all remember how badly the contract negotiations went with the league and the refs. A wider field would require more refs on the field. I don't see that happening either.
Is the NFL gonna add a 12th man to each side too???
Making the field wider makes a lot of sense. One of the reasons for the more violent collisions is that the field is the same size, but the players are way bigger and way faster. Making the field wider, in affect, is like making the players smaller.

It also allows defenders to build up more speed before impact, increasing the frequency of kickoff-calibre hits.
Which is pretty much what the NFL was trying to get away from when they moved kickoffs back to the 35-yard line in 2011.

I agree, too much money would be lost

You could also say the same thing about hockey, and I don't hear anyone talking about a larger rink.

I agree with this!
how much more is the NFL going to do to make the sport ~flag~ football.....?

many stadiums won't be able to expand the fields 35' and still have sidelines near the endzones. and not too sure about the logic of bigger fields and better safety. my first thoughts were more speed with a larger surface.
will they add another ref with a larger field? this is not likely to go through.

It seems they are headed in that direction.

Or Don Beebe helmets!
Realistically, they should be able to coat helmets with a thin layer of padding on the outside as well as all of the padding they put on the inside. It would decrease the brutality of helmet-to-helmet contact significantly.

That could be fun! I have a not-so-secret fetish for bubble wrap!! HAH!
