NFL  > Detroit Lions  > Best choice is not always the sexiest

Lions should go O-line with both 1st rd picks. With a good RB in Smith, and outstanding WR in Johnson, they should give Stanton a chance. Remember there are some very good QBs entering the draft next year just in case. Or pick up Anderson from the Browns. Im sure Bomar will be around in later rounds as well and he is vastly under rated. Also, try to get TJ Houshmazoulli(championship) or Boldin. That would be a great offense. Schwartzk is a great D coach and can make the best of the current D. This year is a good year for O-line and defense... take advantage!!!

Detroit would have to give up multiple picks for Boldin, and with Calvin Johnson already on the roster, they don't need that big of a cap drain. I'm no Lions buff, but it looks to me like what they need to do with their picks is fill up that defense. If they go for Housh in FA, they can use their picks on lb, cb, and o line.

Hey Millen! We don't need Boldin or Houshmandzadeh. We have our #1 receiver. Draft an OT with the first pick, then take a C or OG with the other first round pick. Now you have 3 first rounders blocking up front for Smith and whoever you decide to go with at QB...please not Culpepper.

I know, Culpepper has past success but he was also throwing to Carter and Moss. When they left Minnesota, he tanked because he never learned to read defenses. Beside, I think Orlovsky proved he can handle the offense, if not, give Stanton a chance.

We will improve but not enough that we won't be able to get McCoy, Bradford or Cassell, all of whom are better prospects than anyone coming out this year. And for those Sanchez fans, remember, he couldn't beat out John David Booty at USC, and Booty didn't smell the field in Minnesota.

As for rounds 2-7...DEFENSE!!!

The lions have been consistantly bad for the past fiftey years because they have been wasting money on "talented" wideouts or RB's and not building the necessary parts that make a good Franchise.
Now, the coaching staff already said how they like Backus, Cherilus, raola, and they just sign RG petterman to a five year deal so don't plan on those positions changing to much this year. They should draft a LT in the first pick and start him at left gaurd like another great did..Orland Pace. That should help the entire left side no matter how bad backus plays (really over rated player). I would also love to have them go with a center in the third round because raola is way Way undersized and would be better at gaurd, but i find it less likely they do that. the second pick they should go DT or DE and whatever they don't grab with that pick they should get in the second round.
Forget these stupid wide reciever pick ups. We all saw what they could do with two great recievers...nothing! So build up those lines so if stanton or culpepper or anderson..whoever is throwing the ball doesn't work out we can grab someone next year in the draft thats worth spending some money on, because sanchez aka im worse then booty and stanford aka kyle boller aren't going to cut it in the nfl.

They plan on building through the draft. Well there are some major issues with that.

1. Draft picks are more likely to bust than become Pro Bowl players. Look at the Lion's track record thus far!! And dont give me the same story of "but they picked bad players and they didnt know how to pick players"... That is BS, everyone may have have been stunned, but loved the Roy Williams, Mike Williams, Charles Rodgers, and Calvin Johnson picks. They were expexted to be the next high flying air attack that could score at any time... OOPS

2.By the time you get all your peices together, the guys you drafted in your first draft or 2 will be primed for FA and you will either be in cap hell resigning them all or lose them and yet have to draft again to replace them.

3. The QB position...How many current starting QBs were were 1st round picks (by their current teams, Brees, Pennington..etc not included, they were FAs)(I dont think Jason Campbell should count either..he sucks). Most flop out or get let go to sign with another team.

Point is that alot of the top "Skilled Position Players" were aquired in later rounds, so it should be a no brainer to trade your 1st round for a proven guy (not an old one though).

The Lions need to solidify their line with this pick. I agree that this years class of QB isn't worth the number one pick. With their second first rounder, I'd like to see them address their need at middle LB, althought I love Curry, he is more suited for the strong side backer as opposed to the middle. At 33 they should still be able to get a good DT that can start this year. They still have too many needs too go for the glamour pick with the #1 and no matter who they pick this year, will still (imo) have a high pick in next years draft. Build for the future.

Lions and winning wont be in the same sentence for a few years...

I agree and have no issues with Detroit going for Jason Smith with the first pick. I worked out well for the Dolphins last year and we should use them as a good model. 2nd Pick, 2 words...Rey Malaluga. He would bring a dominating, physical presence in the middle that they haven't had since... ... ... exactly. I don't want to say he will be a young Ray Lewis but name another dominating LB like that.

Their is no way Rey will be there at #20(Lauranitits is more likely there). Remember The Lions already drafted a OT in Gosder Cherulis in the first round last year, He could be moved to RT if they want Jason Smith to play LT. Drafting a OG or C at #20 or #33 is a bit early for a team with that many needs.

If u are gonna go that route why not Curry first then Oher or do u not think Oher would be available?Or do u not pay that much money to a LB 1st pick.....Guess he gotta be a Lawerence Taylor type Huh?

March 23, 2009  11:46 AM ET

The problem Curry would have in the middle is his size. Detroit really doesn't have a dominant D line, so he is going to be hit and hit often by the opposing team's O line. Would I be upset if Curry is taken? Not at all, but at number one, I don't think you can take a player and then change his natural position. Not for that kind of money.

March 31, 2009  10:23 PM ET

How about, take Jason Smith #1, trade #20 and #33 and throw in Stanton for good measures for Cutler. With Cutler there is no learning curve on the speed of the game. Smith, Cherulis, and Bakus moving to LG protecting Cutler throwing to Calvin Johnson and making holes for Kevin Smith..... NOT TOO SHABBY!!!! Imagine, a franchise QB and top tier bookend tackles for the next 10 years, it does not get much better for a rookie HC.Everyone is soooo worried about the D, im sure that Schwartz who is a VERY goo defensive minded coach, can pick up some players from 3rd on and with the FAs from the offseason, and make it OK.

April 1, 2009  06:21 AM ET

I think Detroit should definitely make a play at Cutler, but not if it means giving up their draft choices. Ultimately, they should build through the draft. If they don't get a quality quarterback this offseason, then take the licks and develop the rest of your team and work towards a quarterback the following season.

Management won't come down too hard on the new regime. They can't do any worse than last year's regime.
