NFL  > San Francisco 49ers  > 2013 PRESEASON PREDICTIONS ; NFC WEST

49ERS- For the last 5 months it seems like everytime I turned on the TV to some sports channel they were talking about how much stronger the 49ers were getting. It started with the trade for Anquan Boldin. I gave them an A for their 2013 draft . Right now rookies Cornellius "Tank" Carradine, Quinton Patton, Marcus Lattimore, and Quinton Dial are all injured to some degree or another. They have the top OFFENSIVE LINE, a top 3 DEFENSE, probably the best depth of any team at RUNNING BACK. Two excellent receivers in Boldin and V.Davis with expectations that Crabtree will return in December. Most important of all is they now have established who the QB of the future is: COLIN KAEPERNICK, They need to start the season with a bang with games at home against Green Bay and @ Seattle.

SEATTLE- Seattle will start their first two games probably without Marshawn Llynch, Percy Harvin and Bruce Irvin. I gave them a grade of C+ on their draft. They did much better in free agency than the draft but with the injury to Harvin that took some of the wind out of their sails, but the signings of Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett seem to be good signings.. The biggest setback for Seattle will be if Llynch is suspended ( 2 DUI ) for the first 2 games, @Carolina, 49ers. It will be up to Russell Wilson and their defense to carry them through the first 2 games

ST. LOUIS- All the talk about St. Louis is; are they over the hump? All the talk is about Tavon Austin and how much he will add, the Rams did have another good draft I gave them a B+ as they utilized their 2 first round picks in a good way with Austin and Ogletree, some people forget how important Steven Jackson was to their offense, and for that matter even the importance of the loss of Amendola. I think that St. Louis got a sense of false confidence in beating and tying the 49ers last season. A true barometer as to what kind of team they are will be noticed in their first 4 games Arizona, @ Atlanta, @ Dallas, 49ers.

ARIZONA- Arizona could be the biggest surprise of the season in this division . Arians will be in his first year but he has a pretty decent team that could sneak up on teams. They have a new QB Carson Palmer, Palmer will be happier in Arizona with Fitzgerald to throw to and I'm sure they have some big games, How will Palmer do against some of the best defenses in the NFL that is the big question. Arizona had a good draft that filled some vacancies, I gave them an A-, In free agency they lost more than they gained. It will be interesting to see their season opener @St. Louis. When they went 4-0 in their first 4 games last season 3 or 4 of those games were at home, this year 3 of their first 4 games will be on the road.

THe NFC West is arguably the best division in the NFL. They play the NFC and AFC South's and stack up well against both.

The 49ers of vastly over rated...they had a good year last year, but injuries and mistakes will make them miss the playoffs...The rest of the division has caught up to them.

I predict that one of the read option QB's has a season ending injury in September...you will not be able to fool the Defensive Coordinator's again, like they did last season, IMO QB's are going to get punished for running the type of play, and reconsider putting a franchise QB health in danger after a few concussions.

The Rams & Seahawks have caught up to them but the Cardinals still suck.

The Rams haven't caught up at all. They are still the 3rd best team in the NFC West.

Which part of the 49ers is vastly overrated? The only QB's that might get hurt are those that don't slide or go out of bounds.

Kaepernick in the off season worked out with Olympic Class sprinters and says that it improved his speed.

IMO they are not as physical on either side of the ball as advertised. In your division, you come in third as far as physicality. Both Seattle & St. Louis are far more physical teams than than 49ers are. Now I do think that you have a very good team, and that you could get a wild card berth, and anything can happen. But in the playoffs on the road, I do not think the 49ers will be physical enough to win the NFC...If they were in the AFC, they would have a better chance.

kaepernick is a one year wonder.

I would not say all that, but there is enough tape on him now, that he will now have the same growing pains as all other young QB's...He is very good and ducking, but you can't see them all the time, and when it happens...they will be just like Chicago, almost an expansion team.

It must be awfully lonely knowing that in the whole universe you are the only one who thinks this is true.

Aw the logic of fans. In order for them to have hope they must assume that their team is really better than what is staring them in the face, and praying that the opposition is just an illusion

August 3, 2013  11:30 AM ET

With so many injuries happening to 49er WR's and other players in training camp, and those that they drafted that were already injured. The 49ers signed:
Austin Collie; drafted in 2009 he caught a lot of passes from Peyton Manning. The only underlying question about him is can he stay injury and concussion free ?
Lavelle Hawkins: Hawkins played opposite DeSean Jackson when they were at Cal and both enter the NFL draft in their Jr year. Hawkins actually had more receptions and yards than Jackson in their Jr. year. Hawkins in MOI has better hands than Jackson. He is not afraid to go over the middle and catches the ball in traffic better than Jackson.

These 2 WR's if healthy may take some jobs away from younger players that thought because Crabtree went down with an injury that they would be shoe-ins

August 3, 2013  01:22 PM ET

I agree that the injury to Percy Harvin is devastating to their season because they were counting on him and had big plans for the offense. Their other WR are just average at best.

I discussed Harvin in my recent NFC West Seattle preview - http://fanspeak.com/nfcwest/2013/07/24/why-the-seahawks-can-be-a-success-f ailure-in-2013/. Let me know if you agree!!

Have you not watched Kaepernick? He is good at NOT taking hits.

And vastly overrated? Don't know how. Yes, they had a good year last year, as well as the year before, they are fairly young and have given no reason to believe they cant be the top team in the West again this year.
you sound bitter.

The last two years the 49ers had Alex Smith and did not appreciate it. Low turnovers and a 70% passer. Colin Kaepernick is a good QB, but somebody is going to clean his clock with that read option and all that speed.

Just like how the wildcat got stopped after one year, so will this read option. A QB wears much smaller pads than other players to allow him to throw the ball, and ever defensive coordinator will punish the QB this year for running that play, you will see QB's getting crushed on that fake...when the QB runs down the line for the read option or even fakes a hand off he loses all protection, and will pay the price.

Franchise QB's are hard to find, and easy to lose, in your division the Rams and Seahawks are very physical teams, and are going to make people pay the price for running the read option.

Nothing against your team, I only hate one team, the Green Bay Packers.

Duke,

Having a winning record of 10-6,And not making the playoffs would make any fan bitter.

And best of luck with yer boy Kap.

Narry,

As it's preseason and a lot of teams have had injuries even before the 1st Preseason game?

As yer team's star receivers has been gimped up, and Cincy's receiving corps has been ,riddled as well for an example.

SF's QB has too adjust too that just like Dalton without AJ.

I'm just as curious as others ,on how Kap does this year.

When activated? He was awesome, and the team got hot ,and ended up in the super Bowl.

So yer 9nrs opened a lot of eyes when he replaced Smith. I'm looking for a repeat of that .this year.

Can't wait too see!
