NFL  > General NFL  > Josh Freeman benched, what this really means
September 25, 2013, 12:50 PM
The Bucs benched Josh Freeman for at least this upcoming game on Sunday. Just my psycho babble opinion but I think this is a publicity stunt from Greg Schino to shift the focus and blame onto the QB. You see this alot with coaches on the hot seat, they try to make it look like the problem lies elsewhere. Another recent example of this was Mack Brown firing the DC for the Texas Longhorns, he made a press conference and whole song & dance about the thing. I don't know about you but I think Greg should be benched, not Freeman (can coaches be benched? lol), this move stinks of desperation and I believe the way this melo-drama plays out for the remainder of teh season will determine who will be getting the axe, Greg or Freeman because it's becoming increasingly evident that they can't co-exist. Who knows perhaps the Bucs can both the QB and Coach and start totally fresh next season. I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucs don't try to pull a move similar to Cleveland before the trade deadline and try to load up for the draft, if that happens, it certainly doesn't bode well for either Greg or Freeman.

Freeman will be somewhere else next year, if he can be signed as a clipboard holder and Mack Brown will be doing something else either at UT or coaching elsewhere. As bad as Freeman has been I don't believe it to be a publicity stunt. Schiano may be gone after the season too.

I think this is a telling sign that Schiano's brand of coaching does not work in the NFL.

The team has already held a 'players only meeting' (before they even played a game) which of course would is considered mutiny in the NFL. Owners can't fire the entire team, only get a new leaders.

New QB and coaching staff coming for the Bucs.

Schiano should have stayed at Rutgers, they have built new facilities, joining the Big Ten etc.

anyone see another team making a offer for Freeman before the deadline ? Perhaps Jaguars or Cardinals ?

I seriously doubt any team is willing to give up a player or pick for Freeman. He's damaged goods at this point.

hee hee!! love it!!

I don't think this is a publicity. Schino's job is to win games. Freedman wasn't getting the job done. So, on to the next QB up to start.

Freeman is now asking to be traded.

Flynn for Freeman?

Freeman was a Pro Bowler in 2010, when he played under Greg Olson, the now-Raiders offensive coordinator, in Tampa Bay from 2009-11.

Seems like it could make sense but will it help either team?

I'd have to look it up but that Pro Bowl appearance was 'probably' because someone passed on playing.

Freeman under the right system would do well. Tampa is a mess.

I can only think of one team that might trade for Freeman and they're a mess as well.

Freeman will never be an elite QB.

I doubt Tebow will sign with Tampa Bay but it would certainly be a boost to attendance.
