NFL  > General NFL  > NFL Underrated Team

I saw a small "underrated players" Message Board post on here maybe a week or two ago, which listed Drew Brees as underrated - which didn't go over well with anybody. So I decided to put together a 22-man roster of underrated NFL players.

A few quick notes:
- No player on this list has ever been named an All-Pro
- No player on this list has ever been sent to the Pro Bowl
- No player on this list has ever been ranked in NFL.com's Top 100
- There are no 2013 rookies on this list

QB Alex Smith (KC)
RB Stevan Ridley (NE)
FB Bruce Miller (SF)
WR Brian Hartline (MIA)
WR Jason Avant (PHI)
TE Brandon Myers (NYG)
LT Will Beatty (NYG)
LG Evan Mathis (PHI)
C Eric Wood (BUF)
RG Chris Chester (WAS)
RT Orlando Franklin (DEN)

DE Calais Campbell (ARZ)
NT Barry Cofield (WAS)
DE Muhammad Wilkerson (NYJ)
LOLB Jabaal Sheard (CLE)
MLB James Laurinaitis (STL)
ILB Jerrell Freeman (IND)
RLB Lavonte David (TB)
CB Jason McCourty (TEN)
CB Chris Harris (DEN)
FS Reggie Nelson (CIN)
SS Reshad Jones (MIA)

I found it nearly impossible to name an "underrated quarterback". Offensive players in general receive a lot of publicity for big stat lines, especially in this era of Fantasy Football. And quarterbacks get more press than anyone. For instance, Brian Hoyer has one good game in Cleveland and the whole nation knows about it.

So if you don't agree with my choice of Alex Smith, I challenge you to do this: list the 32 quarterbacks currently starting in the NFL - eliminate every QB who's ever been named an All-Pro, sent to a Pro Bowl, or ranked on NFL.com's Top 100, and started more than four NFL games - and from that list, find a QB with a better stat line and more postseason success.

These were very strict rules and eliminated some popular "underrated" players such as Geno Atkins and London Fletcher. A few guys who qualified and just missed the final cut: DE Michael Bennett (SEA), LB Wesley Woodyard (DEN), CB Casey Hayward (GB).

Enjoy and Discuss.

Just realized I missed a prime opportunity...

NFL (Un)derrated Team

That would have looked so much better in the headline.

KC Chiefs.

Good list. Don't know some of those guys. I guess that supports their (un)derrated nature and that I need to pay better attention to rosters. Ridley of last year definitely, but Ridley of this year? Been pretty quiet in the first 4 games and now injured, no rushing TDs and not great ypc. I might go with DeMarco Murray if he isn't on one of those lists you referenced.

I had Jason Hatcher on as a 4-3 DT but then opted for the 3-4 formation... primarily because I came across a lot of linebackers while researching.

@UN, that is very well thought out. Nice list! Ive heard of all of those players but you are correct most of them get little to no PUB. Your QB choice is right on considering your requirements. I'll add to this later but have to do some research first before doing so. Great stuff!

Here are 2 more players that are underrated. D'Qwell Jackson LB for the Browns is my first one, never gets any PUB and he leads the league in tackles. Regarding another QB - Matthew Stafford is my 2nd player. Stafford is only 1 of 4 QB's in NFL history to have a season with over 5000 Yards passing and he got the Lions to the Playoffs in 2011 and nobody ever talks about him, it's always all Megatron talk with the Lions and I rarely see Stafford on any Top 15 list that is done regarding current QB's over the last 3 years. Stafford has never made a Pro Bowl, Jackson hasn't either and has been a solid Pro for years. Obviously neither have been All-Pro's or are Rookies. Regarding the Top 100 list of 2013 Jackson was #96 so to me that is still very underrated, he barely made that but maybe you didn't list him because he did make that list but barely.

Small correction: D'Qwell Jackson was 96th on the 2012 list not 2013, he didnt even make the Top 100 for 2013. Regarding Stafford, Matt Stafford was ranked 76th on the 2013 list which is last lower qtr.

Here are the QB's that constantly come up by most people before Stafford is even mentioned at all - Peyton, Brady, Rodgers, Brees - all 4 much deserving/, Flacco, Rivers, Cutler, Romo, Ryan, Schaub, Vick, Ben and Eli eventhough both are 0-4 out of the Vets and Luck, Wilson, Kaep, Tannehill, Cam, and RG3 out of the youngsters get mentioned much more. That is 19 QB's right there that get much more PUB than poor ol 3-1 Matt Stafford :) I would take Stafford over Cutler, Romo, Schaub, Vick, or Cam any day and I actually would take him over RG3 too because RG3 is damaged goods as of now. Going by this season Stafford is MUCH BETTER than Ryan, Ben, and Eli as well.
