NFL  > Carolina Panthers  > Peppers?
February 25, 2009, 10:20 AM
Ok the Panthers used the franchise tag and Peppers. What should we do with him? Should we trade him for another player, and if so who? Or should we trade him for two first round draft picks since we don't have a first round pick this year? Or should we try to match another team's offer and try to hold on to Peppers for another year? What is your take on this scenario?
Personally I would like to have him for another year just because I am a huge Tar Heel fan and I really like Pep alot and I think he is a great player. But I believe the best thing for the team is to try and get two first round draft picks or to trade him for a really underrated player that has great potential.
Well what do you think?

I think they either have to come to some kind of arrangement with Pep to get him on board emotionally, or trade him. Can't let him, hold out or give less than 100% next year by forcing him to play here. Yet, we need some compensation for him.

I think we would be better off trading Peppers to another team. Don't get me wrong, I still believe that Peppers is an excellent player and we would have a really big void in the DE position, but can we expect a player who wants to play somewhere else to play 110% for a team that he's trying to leave? I'm not sure how much more dedicated Peppers would be to the Panthers since he's trying to play somewhere else. I would try to find some measure of compensation for losing Peppers. I like Peppers and can understand what he wants and it's not money that he wants either.

Cassell is gone! Now I don't have to hear about a straight swap. Hopefully, they can get a couple decent draft choices, and rebuild.

March 2, 2009  01:35 PM ET

i belive that they should try to trade him to the broncos for jay cutler they were trying to trade cutler earlier this weekend maybe they will still be willing to especially for a player with peps potential.what do you think?

March 2, 2009  06:25 PM ET

Okay i understand what Peppers wants does this mean his head and his heart have not truely been into Foxs system and if so for how long? I remember his first year onto the scene and he made incredable plays but you know since that year he has not been the power house that he came out being. Don't tell me to look at his numbers because i know what i have seen with my own eyes and all last year he was sick? Come on now that is BS he just hasn't been the aggresive kinda player he was and he has no loyality what so ever. I am a huge UNC fan and when guys like Willie Parker came through that system at the time no wonder players got overlooked and misused. I think with what is going on in the world today (I am in Afghanistan) and i have a since of loyality to everyone that resides in the USA much less NC. GO HEELS

Call it a hunch, Peppers will end up in NE. NE cleared cap space to improve their team depth. NE will make a splash somewhere and Peppers is a perfect fit.

March 3, 2009  08:53 AM ET

Pep and his agent understood that this was going to happen. They also understand that a trade for him after he is tagged is not likely. It is simply too much to give for a guy that is one year removed from 2.5 sacks.

People continue to say that Pep won't put out now that he is tagged. He doesn't want to sabotage the rest of his career, HE WILL PLAY HARD. Go talk to Albert Haynesworth about playing hard for a team that has tagged you. If he doesn't play hard and put up good numbers this year, he won't get a very good long term deal next year. He will play hard this year and will be in the Pro-Bowl again. This is a one year contract which means he has to play hard again so that he can try to get a BIG contract next year. It is really the perfect storm for him, if he puts up good numbers he could land a HUGE deal next year, with no salary cap.

I heard the Pepper to New England rumors too, as a Patriots fan I would be pretty excited to get him. But they said that they are trying to lock up Wilfork first with their new found cap money, his current deal expires after this season.

I agree with smccurry. I would love to see a Peppers for Cutler trade and throw in Delhomme if they will take him. they could look in to someone like Jason Taylor to fill the void at DE. I know he is gettign old and is coming off a down season but he was dealing with injuries last year.

March 3, 2009  08:53 PM ET

I can't think of a better fit for Peppers than the Packers. 3-4 defense, Dom Capers. He could have the Reggie White like effect. Besides GB is looking for that kind of help. TT needs to make something happen.

I think it is time to let Pep go with the proper compensation that a team should get for it's Star Player. 2 first rounders may be a little much but that is the rule for such a player. Sign Jason Taylor to replace him and use the picks for a top flight Safety and a Corner back. Use your existing 1st round pick to get a QB and continuue to grow the young very talented team. Thank you Julius for so many good years!

March 5, 2009  05:20 AM ET

I think Peppers plays the year out with the panthers, can't see anyone giving up 2 first rounders for him. His demand to play in a 3-4 would limit takers for him. Dont think anyone would trade a one for him, maybe a second rounder. But then these GMs are crazy, so who knows???

He plays this year, plays really well as all players on contract years do then signs some silly contract in line with the like of Hayneworth.

March 6, 2009  03:09 PM ET

I really like Pep, but I understand his desire to move on. On a more selfish note he screws up my jersey collection if he leaves...anyway I like the Jay Cutler for Pep idea. That would be a fair straight up trade. They can have Jake too, I think he's a nice guy but uh he's just too indecisive for me.

March 9, 2009  12:18 AM ET

NO Cutler! He's a whiny ****!

Why not just sit down with Peppers, and see what he REALLY wants. He says he likes Carolina, likes NC (home state), just wants to fulfill he potential. OK .....maybe he's right. They shifted him around the line, and it worked. Why not, if this is what he is seeking (and it sounds like it) shift to OLB sometimes too. Can you imagine the fits it would give defenses to have to deal with Tyler Brayton, Charles Johnson, and Pep all coming from the edge! That may give alot of QB,s cold sweats. Then we could focus on a actual interior line threat.

March 16, 2009  04:17 PM ET

Just read that he might be going to the patriots

March 16, 2009  07:37 PM ET

2 first rounders ?? how about 1 2nd rounder thats what were tradeing him for !! way to go panthers

March 16, 2009  07:49 PM ET

I just heard that they should consider trading him to Denver for Jay Cutler and Denver's Second Round pick. Jay Cutler want's out of Denver and Peppers want's out of Charlotte. So why not trade for Cutler? Plus we kinda need to start look for another Franchise QB.

March 20, 2009  12:39 AM ET

Hey...Neighbor.....Who is trading him for a #2 round pick....Just bend over a little farther and I will show you where the Patriot Fan that started that rumor can kiss.

March 20, 2009  12:28 PM ET

Getting a little tired of the Peppers saga. If he doesn't want to be part of the Panthers TEAM (I still shifting him around including OLB would be effective), let his punk ass go! Just about tired of all the prima dona big ass contracts anyway. So many of these players get their big money, and then suck. I say contract should have a modest baseline and have the big cash in incentives (injury clauses would be acceptable).

Carolina needs players who want to WIN!

NOTE: What the h e l l bargining clause is wanting to be the highest paid play?!?!? (Hayneworthless). That screams "all about the money, I'll let you down!"

March 23, 2009  09:27 AM ET

Unless Peppers " buys" into paying for the Panthers 100%, he could poison the locker room and things will go downhill quickly. He is a top quality player HOWEVER no one player is worth the disharmony and negativity that someone can bring to the locker room. Get him onboard quickly or abondon ship
