Let's watch some football!!!

Why is this board up so early in the week once again? Have you taken a gander at the slate of games for tomorrow night? When was the last time Tuesday night football looked this good? the last Bowl season?

Game On! Ohio (6-3) @ BG (6-3), the #3 team in the MAC East visits the #2 team in the MAC East.

Game on! Buffalo (7-2) @ Toledo (6-3), the #1 team in the MAC East visits the #3 team in the MAC West. Note: The Rockets have one conference loss; the two teams ahead of them, NIL & Ball St. have no conference losses and are on a collision course for Wednesday night. We are talking MACtion! MAC attack, baby! Get your brats and beer on the ready!

Spartans going to Lincoln for a B1G showdown in the Legends Division. Should be a good one.

At stake this week: the Illibuck trophy. Series record: tOSU 60, Illinois 23, with 2 ties.

Beat the Rainbow Warriors on the island (easier this year than most years) and SDSU can go bowling-oddly enough probably in the Hawaii bowl.

GO SPARTY!

Yah, NEB is coming on strong but I do like teams that just simply shut the other guy down.

CFB should not be played on Tuesday. Sorry UB...

November 13, 2013  06:48 AM ET

Well, for those that tuned in, BG blew out Ohio, 49-0 (Would it have been any different had they played on the Smurf turf?). The other Tuesday night game was Buffalo @ The Rockets. Toledo ran through Buffalo like brats through a beer-infused Van, leading 31-0 at the half. Buffalo came out slinging it in the second half (Licata for 497 yards). They scored like pinball wizards, but came up short, yielding another 20 to their hosts. Things are glassy in Ohio this morning.

MACtion tonight promises more, with NIU playing host to Ball State.

Nice shout out to the Toledo area glass manufacturers. :-)

Heck of a game tonight in the mighty MAC as Northern Illinois (9-0) took on Ball State (8-1).

The end of the first half was fairly whacky - and the end of the second was even better.

The teams were all tied up early in the 4th qtr but the Huskies pulled away with 21 unanswered points (including a pick-6) to move to 10-0 on the season.

can't beat Wednesday night college football...

On the flip side of the MAC coin, Kent State got their 3rd win of the season over luckless Miami University (0-10).

Poor Miami University (commonly referred to as Miami Ohio) - they probably won't win a game this year, as they finish the season with Buffalo (7-3), and Ball State (8-1).

Maybe 0-12 is a portent of things to come.
Afterall, it wasn't all that long ago that Ball St was 0-11.

Well, curiosity got the best of me, so I watched a replay of the MSU/TSUN game from two weeks ago to try and get some insight into Sparty's vaunted and sophisticated defense. My findings:

1) Pat Narduzzi coaches great fundamentals. His players know their read keys, and play off them quickly. The Sparty D is mostly comprised of juniors and seniors who have played together for some time now and have a wealth of experience. They originate almost every stunt/blitz out of their base 4-3. And this is where it gets interesting...

2) Of the 70 plays by TSUN that I counted, Sparty's D played base only 17 times by my reckoning. That means that the other 53 defensive plays involved some sort of stunt or blitz, which comes out to 75% of their plays. VERY aggressive defensive philosophy.

3) The vast majority of these stunt/blitz packages involved the following: Mike/Will twist 'A' gap, DE/DT twist, OLB/DE twist, OLB shoot, SS/OLB weakside blitz, and Will/DT twist w/ Mike spy or dropback coverage. They show four down linemen, but bringing these stunts make a +1 rushing advantage in most instances and also confuse blocking assignments.

4) The corners play man/cover 1 and are left on their own to lock down the receivers. This frees the safeties to focus on run support and the occasional blitz. Very little soft zone.

5) Sparty's defensive ends have a tendency to crash/overplay the line of scrimmage whenever they see the QB show read-option. If they get sucked in, the OLB/SS take over outside pursuit.

6) MSU's favorite blitz down is 2nd and long, followed by 3rd and long. They stunted on 1st down when TSUN was deep in its own territory.

To sum up, what I see is a very formidable defense by Sparty. For those of you watching MSU/Nebraska this Saturday, let me know if you see anything else. I think tOSU is going to be in a dogfight if both Sparty and the Bucks meet up in the CCG come December.

Watching a game live with you, GTH is like having your own savvy analyst right by your side. If I lived in your town, I'd put up a game with you in a charity auction. Truly. Be well, my friend.

I'd like to do that some day. BUT, he'd have to speak in "cave man" terms for me to understand him.

I've got a limited vocabulation ya know!

Kind words, Tinny. As you might also infer, Sparty worries me. I'd blather on more about MSU, but suffice it to say their offense/special teams are very Tresselesque.

It's going to be a fairly interesting slate of B1G games this Saturday: Indiana @ Wisconsin; Michigan State @ Nebraska; and TSUN @ Northwestern.

Excellant analysis of our D. One thing I'd add. Bullough at the Mike is like a coach on the field. He will constantly revise the stunts/blitzes based on what he reads from the offense set up. He's a 3 year starter at the Mike, and according to Narduzzi, knows the Defense as well or better than the coaching staff. He will be the most difficult piece to replace after this year. Good kid, smart too. Majoring in Finance.
