NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Best and Worst - TV and Radio Play-by-Play Announcers (College Football)

Who are the best and worst play-by-play announcers on TV and Radio? Names are good, examples and rationale are even better.

I'll go first:

Best TV Announcer: Gus Johnson, Fox Sports. He brings energy and excitement to every play and treats both teams equally. He's pumped all game every game and is fun to listen to.

Best Radio Announcer: Don Fischer, Indiana. Same as above - energy and excitement on every play. You can visualize the action when Don is announcing and he's fun to listen to. His excitement on scoring plays is classic highlight reel stuff.

Worst TV Announcer: Rece Davis, ESPN. His on-air personality seems forced. Doesn't bring much excitement except on scoring plays or turnovers. In a word, he's just a boring monotone announcer.

Worst Radio Announcer: Dave South, Texas A&M/Learfrield Sports. Only brings excitement to a handful of plays which makes visualizing the action difficult . Uses "we" "us" "they" and "them" when calling the action leaving me wondering who he's talking about. Calls opposing players by their jersey numbers not their names like he didn't study the roster in advance ... says stuff like "touchdown by that guy".

And yours?

Worst TV has to be Musburger.

Poor Herbstreit has to sit next to, and listen to him every week, I think at some point I'd just lose it, and reach over and strangle Mushmouth til he passed out.

Mustburger is a dry leaf floating on the wind. He is a pale ghost of sportscasters past.

Can we all pause for a moment of appreciation for KJ. Keith Jackson, THE MAN.

Bucknut that I am, I will mention a few sportscasters who happen(ed) to be from tOSU and who I've enjoyed listening/watching over the years:

TV: Jack Buck (deceased). Kirk Herbstreit. Chris Spielman. Clark Kellogg. And Bobby Knight.
