"Hey, Tone. You guys are carrying, what, five major league ready arms on your roster right now?"

"Yeah, that sounds about right. Although, Dunc says after a few more weeks of his Magic Dust we might have a couple more."

"Never did understand that stuff of his. Anyways, think you'd be able to get a few of our guys some work in over the next month?"

"Hmm. Ya know, that just might work. Sure would help take some of the stress off our staff. Let me talk to Mo and I'll get back to ya."

Later that day...

"Hey, John. Ya know, I was talking to Trembley over with the Orioles and he's having a time trying to get all his guys innings on the mound. Asked if we'd be interested in letting them get some time in with us. I'll tell ya, sure would help with our lack of depth. Whatdya think?"

"You're an idiot...(walks away)"


The actual correspondance from the last couple of days had to be more comical than the above. The idea...(ha)...the idea that the Cardinals could afford to let pitchers from another organization eat up their Spring Training innings...HA! It's absolutely hysterical!

I realize that the Cards have had a few minor injuries occur in the last couple of weeks to pitchers (Boggs, Scherer, Mortensen), but in what way did this proposal really make sense for the Cardinals? From an Orioles standpoint it was a sweet deal. They get a chance to see their guys in action even on days they're not playing. Meanwhile, the Cardinals would be allowing themselves less innings to evaluate the less than major league adequate talent they have available.

Personally, I'm glad that Moz shot this one down. The Cards need to make sure they're scouring every level of their own minor league system for pitchers that can make an impact in the bigs. Else the "pitching shortage" they're currently experiencing is going to look like nothing come July when real injuries are occuring during real games.

What do you think? Think Mo made the right decision? Or should he hang for questioning the wisdom of Larussa?
