NFL  > San Francisco 49ers  > FAREWELL TO THE STICK ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
December 24, 2013, 10:50 AM
It turned out that the 49ers win 34-24 turned out to be one in a long list of memorable events. So was it fitting that the regular season Home Games should end this way?

No, the 49ers should have won 49- 10, that would have been fitting. But in typical Greg Roman fashion he lacked the testosterone or killer instinct needed to make this a lopsided win over a team that is hampered by injuries.

Romans mindset is that of a Mother Predator teaching its babies how to hunt. Instead of suffocating the life out of the prey he allows the babies to practice, and occasionally allowing 1 or 2 meals to get away.

Roman has been like this since day one as the 49er offensive coordinator, 80% of his first halves are very low scoring, under 10 points. He is overly cautious like a little old lady not knowing when to advance at a 4 way intersection. Even when there are no other cars to fear.

I guess I should be happy with the last second heroics of Bowman. I didn't know I could jump that high.

That's a pretty nice way to shut it down.

Ha! You sound like me when I bemoan my sub-par team and its play calling. Read it twice and laughing again, not at you but at the general quality that we all WANT the crushing defeat against what appears to be the "lowly" teams. With parity in the NFL teams are in many cases just a hair's breadth apart in talent and results.

As one who only sees SF on occasion in my market your assessment seems about right from what I saw last night. Kap seems a bit restricted and does his best work in a more frenetic approach. Nice that Bowman was able to redeem himself in front of the fans after missing the onside kick (not blaming him, never easy to field that odd shaped ball). Saw his 2 minute post-game on the sideline and he was very astute on his impact, both good and bad, in the last 2 minutes of the game and how he wanted to send the SF fans home with a win in the storied park. Good guy.

Truthfully I was pulling for Atlanta in the last 10 minutes for a Cards/49'r showdown this weekend. Better game for the League Fans. NBC would've been better served to go to Niners/Cards if Atl had won.....another round of hind-sight on my part.

It was a fitting end for Niner faithful. I frankly hated the stick my last venture there was when the Steelers were in town and the lights went out. Finally made it in the game and lights went out again. Made way to beer line walking back to seat get ejected for "smoking pot". Wouldn't have a problem with this if I in fact smoked pot, but I don't. Wife kids in game at seats with no cell phone coverage I'm ejected for smoking dope which I don't do. Expensive night. The thing is there were folks smoking weed all over the place and they single me and I think because of the steelers jersey.

C.rap deal to happen at a game. Was it clowns in the bright fluorescent Green-Ts? or actual Law Enforcement? So you have two beers (assuming one for the wife) hands full of course and your blunt is where? No doubt they singled you out. Family must have been worried sick and rest of game spent wondering where you went? Not a good evening at all.

With Stub-Hub and cost of season tickets MANY season ticket holders are recouping some of their expenses by putting up a week or two out of 8 to get some money back. NFL needs to ensure that a "visitor" has a safe and fun experience when they go to see their team at an away park. It keeps the stands full particularly in the second half when your home team drops below .500; sell your tickets and everyone wins in theory.

What killed me about the first half is all of the scheme plays that never work. Gore was running 5 to 7 yards every time, yet on 3rd and 1 they want to run a trick play. What happened in the 2nd half was the 49ers went back to basic football, no trick plays. What pisses me off about the play calls this year is the fact that they go away from Gore far too often. I am a fan of down the field plays, but when you need 3 or 4 yards, give the damn ball to Gore or run a basic pass play.

In the end, we are bitching about a win, but there was some piss poor preparation for last night's game.

And when Bowman let that onside kick get by him, I all but expected to lose that game. What a way to redeem himself with the pick six. Like you, narry, I was jumping like crazy when he ran that back. Pissed the wife off and kinda hurt myself, but it's all worth the joy.

Not law enforcement it was stadium security. They came up asked to see my ticket which yes I had to set a beer down to get, because both hands were full. He took my ticket walked over to law enforcement and said I want him thrown out for smoke pot. I like WTF are you talking about. Cops ran a warrent check on me etc......apologized said their hands were tied escorted me out of stadium. I asked it they could notify my wife and kids and they said they didn't have the manpower or time to do it. Was a F-Ed deal the whole way around.

it looked like Atlanta was playing better than the 49r's [off-nite?] for most of the game that i watched,......falcons should've tied the game, if not win at the end.

December 24, 2013  04:28 PM ET

plus,.....i took Atlanta (+12.5)......*MM can finally buy narry a gift = jeff Garcia autographed/jock-strap*.

Garcia wore a Jock-Strap? Why? Nahhh I like Garcia, the guy was probably less than average in athletic ability but made it up in effort and heart. +1 for trying; like effort.

On the other hand Garcia was stuttering last night about as badly as Chris Mortenson when trying to break a story ahead of Schefter. Seeing those two knuckleheads go head-to-head is painful to watch.

A fluke play beat Atlanta but they played better than the Niners in my opinion.

GNG,
not sure if better but the momentum definitely switched back and forth during the game. SF made the big play when Atlanta was SOOOOOO close to make their big play and win.....football....why it is so fun.

If you go to the 49ers SI home page. There are pictures up above. In the middle there is a girl holding a home made banner saying " Thanks for the memories , that is her brother standing next to her with his head resting on hers.

Well I went to school with her mother and her aunt, and she ( girl holding sign ) went to school with my niece. This past September I went to a class reunion to see her mother and ended up dancing and partying with her daughter and her daughters sister and cousins who attended the reunion to take pictures and help their mother organize the reunion

Their family was on a recent NFL Films documentary called "Brothers and Sisters" and their little 10 minute segment was called " The Confetti Twins" . Apparently NFL Films has been taking their pictures for the last 30+ years as they celebrated every 49er TD. It was like watching a time lapse film seeing them age and the hair styles change, even Don Meredith mentioned them one MNF game as they sipped champagne in the stands . At the reunion we were talking about the 49ers and I mentioned to them that NFL Films should do a documentary of Candlestick and that it would be nice if they had the sisters in it. 3 weeks later the one sister called me and said " NFL Films just called us" .

It think the complaining is because so many 49er fans expected this game to be a cake walk and Atlanta came within 10-15 yards of ruining what should have been an easy win to add to the list of Candlestick memories.

You're not alone in your complaints. Plenty of fans were ecstatic for the dramatic win. But Lack of a pass rush, a very giving secondary that allowed Ryan to pass for more yards against them than any QB this season.

Again an offense that was again very pedestrian. Many people were expecting rookie TE Vance McDonald to show some promise, I'm not impressed so far. It was nice to see Kendall Hunter have a nice run, I didn't even notice that rookie Quinton Patton played a few downs.

on any given day........any team can beat the best...[...er...almost].

Great and funny Thread. Narry with the little old lady reference and the I didn't know I could jump that high is good stuff. Mother with the Gift of Jeff Garcia/autographed jock-strap reference is priceless. 49ers didn't really play that well but got the win and will be a tough out in the Playoffs IMO. That stadium had a lot of great memories. 5 Championship seasons.
