NFL  > General NFL  > Do the Bengals need to make a change after 0-3 in playoffs ?
January 5, 2014, 06:19 PM
Cincinnati combination of Andy Dalton/Marvin Lewis is 0-3 in the playoffs, 2 of 3 being home playoff games. Marvin Lewis after 11 seasons is 0-5 in the playoffs. This team has a highly paid defense that is solid. The offensive weaponry is great, I think the questions on this team at this point, are with the QB play of Andy Dalton and the coaching of Marvin Lewis. The tough part however is who can you get to replace either Lewis or Dalton, that can do a better job? Alot of teams are in the market for a head coach and quarterback so the Bengals can't draft a QB since all of the good QBs will be off the board by midway through the 1st round. And Cincinnati would also be getting into the market for a new HC a week behind 6 other teams, although certainly a HC would rather go to Cincinnati where your much closer to winning than a place like Tampa or Washington.

I was really surprised at how easy Cincy beat Indy this season as to me Dalton isn't Top 10, he is good but you need an Elite QB or at least very good QB to do anything. Romo is better than Dalton for example. I feel bad for EZ because he is a cool dude but I could see this coming. Regarding my picks I had Colts, Chargers, Eagles, and Packers. I guess I need to stick to the AFC haha. My 2 NFC picks lose on last second FG's but being close never counts on picks.

Is the loss each year for the same reason(s)? If so then Lewis should go. IF it was injuries one year, bad QB the next, crushed by Free Agency another then maybe the Coach is not the issue. Who's the GM? Sorry I don't follow the Bengals that closely.

Well I feel sorry for him myself. I have even mentioned to him that if Cincinnati cannot make the Conference Championship that they need to very seriously consider firing Marvin Lewis. It is very apparent he cannot take this team to the next level. With all the talent that is available to them there is no excuse for this loss.

I'm glad with all the teams that won, the only team that I was surprised that won was New Orleans, San Diego was my pick for an upset . I hope they all win next week.

Someone tell the 49ers , San Diego, and New Orleans that they weren't supposed to win in cold weather. Will the media please lay this myth to rest. I think the NFL needs to put some money together and buy Green Bay a domed stadium. When the game only sells out within hours of the deadline it means people are tired of living in the ICE AGE.

I enjoy watching those cold weather games from the comfort of my man cave.

You're blaming Marvin Lewis because his QB forgot which color jersey to throw to? I'm truly amazed that a person such as yourself with this keen insight isn't already a GM in this league somewhere!

Yeah, "all that talent" ... you know, except at the most important position on the team and at the most crucial of times.

As a Steelers fan I really hope they don't dump Lewis. Reality is though his teams under perform in the playoffs. They came out flat again today, not sure what the offense was doing, and turnovers. All these things point to a teams that isn't well prepaired that falls on the coach. Lewis has had his chances do get it done at home on the road you name it, his teams more often than not come up short. But hey as a Steelers fan hate to see him go, just like when they let Palmer go it was a sad day.

I'm also a Steelers fan and without those Dalton turnovers and a drop of a long pass at the 5 yard line by a Bengals receiver, the Bengals probably would have won. Even Shannon Sharp said this loss isn't on the Bengals coach. it's on the Bengals QB.

Then there's the whole other problem of the owner humiliating his coach by insisting that the team re-sign guys like PacMan Jones after Lewis publicly stated that he didn't want him on the team.

Anybody who is scapegoating Marvin Lewis for this last loss needs their head examined.

Last time the Bungles won a playoff game, Boomer Esiason was QB. That's 0-5 in the past 23 years.

I'm not pinning the loss solely on Lewis anymore than I going to listen to advice from Shannon Sharpe. Yes Dalton played poorly that's not news but why was he put in the position to cost his team anyway? It's not like the Chargers stopped the running game the Bengals chose not to run. Drop passes, fumbles, etc, are signs of a lack of concentration in other words not being prepared. Combine that with this is how his teams always look in the playoffs a change is not only warranted it's needed. But like I said as a Steelers fans I'd love to see him retained. I mean chances they show up ready to repeat as division champs under Lewis are pretty slim. In fact history says they might not even make the playoffs.

January 6, 2014  07:00 AM ET

How about firing the offensive coordinator? I know a lot of people are big on Jay Gruden. But he can't get the job done in the postseason. And it sure beats replacing the QB or Head Coach.

January 6, 2014  07:28 AM ET

I was not impressed with the o-line. let's start the finger pointing there.

January 6, 2014  08:26 AM ET

I wouldn't give up on Dalton. He's only 3 years into his career and it's not like he has the best coaching around him either. At least he's getting to the playoffs, which is more than I can say for some much more experienced QB's around the league.

One simple question: Who determines if Dalton plays every week? Like I said to other Cincinnati fans, if Lewis isn't fired this week then he has one more season of being on the hot seat and if he does not get Cincinnati to the AFC Championship he should be fired .

January 6, 2014  09:32 AM ET

For all those people making excuses for Marvin Lewis. Let me ask you one simple question; Should Schwartz of Detroit or Shannahan of Washington or any other coach that was fired be given a reprieve and blame all the problems on the Players ?. I saw Megatron drop some really easy passes that kept Detroit out of the playoffs.

January 6, 2014  10:30 AM ET

It's really simple it starts and stop with the head coach. It's his job to get his team ready to play. Clearly the bengals have not only played poorly in post season but many times they have under performed in regular season as well. Let's cut to the deal here if he wasn't black the media would be all over his arse for the way his team played, period! Now since he is black all of a sudden he is free from fault and it's the coordinators, QB, O-line, etc........ Well. Who's is charge of making sure all those people are doing their jobs? Marvin Lewis. Sound like along with all those other scapegoats Marvin isn't doing a very good job either.

I blame the loss on Andy Dalton as I am sure EZ will too, his fumble was just ridiculous not even being touched, then he had an INT that was just terrible. He isn't Luck where he regroups after a TO and just scores like it is nothing, he gets too rattled.
